Library Media Center

November Newsletter

A note from my laptop to yours

Hello everyone,

Our school has one book fair a year and in accordance with Ecuadorian law, a local bookstore, Libreria Studium assists us with the sale. We will have over 1800 books from prek-5th grade level as well as some Spanish and Spanish Adult books available from $5 to $15 with some more expensive Spanish books. This week promoted and answered questions about the book fair with all of the prek-5th grade students. For the week of November 10th, all of the students from Prek-5th grades will be visiting the library media center sometime Monday through Wednesday to peruse and select any books to purchase. Students will be able to either buy or reserve the books that they select.

Here is the basic information that I have shared with students this week:

WHAT: Book Fair (like a book store)

WHEN: Monday, Nov. 10th-Thursday, Nov. 13th and Friday, Nov. 14th 7:30 am-4:00 pm

WHERE: Elementary Library

WHO: Prek-5th grades

HOW MUCH: $5-15

BENEFIT: Our Library Media Center receives 30% of the total sales which then is used to purchase books for our students, parents, and staff to enjoy. It is definitely a win-win situation when we purchase books at the book fair!!

* There will not be any book checkouts or LMC classes during the week of the book fair.

* This is a book sale and not a book swap.

* There are a limited number of copies of books.

* The price of the books is written on the inside right corner of the book. The price is increased due to taxes and shipping and importation costs.

* Books can be purchased with cash, check or credit card. Facturas will be available.

* Students can bring money or put the books on reserve when they come for their visit.

* Books will be kept on reserve until the next day at 9 am and then the books are put back on the shelf.

Please feel free to contact me at or 246-7411 with any questions or suggestions.

Best regards,

Give a gift of a book to your child's classroom library!!

New this year, students can choose to purchase a pre-selected book(s) to give to their classroom library. Before the book fair begins, classroom teachers will come to the book fair and pre-select 10 books that they think would be good additions to their classroom libraries. These suggestions will each have the title, author and cost of the book. Students and/or parents can choose to purchase one or more of these books to give as a gift. Then the gift giver can either ask us to deliver the book or they can wrap and deliver it themselves. Please consider taking this opportunity to help us "grow" our student's classroom libraries. Ask a LMC staff member for more information if you would like to participate.

COMING SOON...Save the date.

During the week of the book fair, students, families and staff will have the opportunity to donate any gently used or new books to children in need. There will be a box near the cash registers where the books can be donated. Thank you for your generosity and support!

Congratulations to our winners for the October Book Character Contest. Eleven students from first grade to fifth grade correctly guessed all 10 of the book character silhouettes. They received a cookie from the snack bar for their great guessing skills. Thank you everyone for participating!

Using Destiny Quest to help your 3rd-5th grade students get Just Right books

Many of you have already heard or helped your 3rd, 4th or 5th grade student complete their "library" homework. This "homework" was a joint effort from the classroom teacher and myself to help your child find books that will be at a reading level that isn't too hard or too easy or as we like to say, Just Right. Their Lexile range was received from the M.A.P. testing that the students did at the beginning of the school year.

I have attached a PowerPoint with the directions and pictures to help you and your child find these books that will help them become better and better readers. Students will need to continue this process throughout the year to update their lists. I have asked them to check out and read at least one of their selected books every book checkout time. I appreciate your support and assistance in helping your child become their best reading self.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
