LAST WEEKS LEARNING STARS
KIDS ART - orders by Friday please!
HOLIDAY LIBRARY BORROWING
We would really like to encourage you to keep your children reading over the holidays! As a result we will once again open the library up next week for families to come in and issue out 10 books to have at home over the holidays. The library will be open for families from Monday 22 September to Thursday 26 September from 8:20 - 8:50 and from 3.00 –3.20. Please note: We would really love to see Mum’s or Dad’s coming into the library with their children to select their 10 books.
We will also be requiring all children to keep a reading log over the holidays. The teachers will go over this with the children and they will receive their log on the last day of the term. This time all children will have the option to complete their log in their online portfolio on USpace. Reading Logs and holiday library books will need to be returned to school on the first day back after the holidays. If every child reads, or was read to, for 15 minutes each day X 7 days = 105 minutes 2 weeks holiday = 210 minutes per child (Thirty one half hours of reading time) - WOW!
We look forward to seeing you next week in the library selecting books with your children.

TE RANGA TAHI PERFORMANCE 2019 - SAVE THE DATE
This year Toko School would like to showcase our learning around Kapa-haka and to celebrate our cultural learning, and to have shared kai with our friends and whanau.
Our performance will be on Wednesday 11th December at 11:30am. This will be the only performance. After the performance, we will have a hangi which we would like to ask our community for donations of food to feed everybody. This request will be sent out near the end of this term. You will need to pre-book your hangi tickets, and these will be available early next term. If there is anybody who would liked to be involved in collecting firewood or setting the hangi, helping with the menu, food preparation etc, then please let Annette know in the office.
PTA UPDATE

Taranaki Trophy - Year 7 and 8
The Taranaki Trophy rugby team ventured to Rahotu on Monday to play their last two games of pool play. They faced Coastal and won 81-10 and Oakura and won 27-12. The final will be played here at Toko School at 11.30am against Auroa. All of those boys involved are asked to bring a plate for the after match function however we are unable to use the hall to heat food so please keep that in mind. All plates of food are to be taken to the school staffroom please. The Hall area is a no go zone as we will still have speeches on in there. Feel free to come along and support the team in the final.
Rich & Weir Cups
Congratulations to our Year 7 & 8 Toko rugby and netball teams who took on Ngaere last week in the annual sports exchange. We won the netball 19-8 and the rugby 58-24. Well done to all of those involved, a massive thanks to our coaches who give up their time to support us and thanks to Ngaere for another great exchange.

Taranaki Cross Country
This is on Wednesday 25th September at the Hawera A & P Showgrounds. We are leaving Toko School at 9am and meeting a number of runners and their families there. If everyone could wait until we arrive so we can all walk the course together that would be greatly appreciated. Children will need to wear their Toko School top and black leggings/shorts. They will also need to bring morning tea, lunch, water and warm clothing as the event will go ahead unless the weather is extreme. Some food will be on sale at the event. Best of luck to all of our runners who are involved.
Wicked Wheel
This will be run at school next Friday. During Wicked Wheel each child participates in their houses from Year 1-8 in a range of fun events. All students are encouraged to wear their house clothes on the day and bring a spare pair of clothes if the weather is dicey. House points awarded to best dressed in each class.
TOUCH RUGBY GAMES - BY SPORTS COUNCIL
The Sports Council are running some touch rugby games over the next 3 weeks. They will be running a Year 1-4 session on Tuesdays and a Year 5-8 session on Fridays. The teams will be based on which house they are in. Sports councilors would love to see children wearing their house colours to the sessions. If your child does not have house colours they will still be able to participate.
HELPING YOUR CHILDREN AT HOME
IS YOUR CHILD SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME ONLINE?
If the time your child is spending on the internet is having a negative effect on other areas of their development, it’s important to look at their internet use.
Questions to think about
Is excessive internet use affecting their sleep?
Is excessive internet use affecting the quality of their schoolwork?
Has their behaviour changed?
Do they become angry or even aggressive if you try to limit their time online?
Are they spending so much time online that other hobbies are becoming less important?
If your children take their devices to bed with them to ensure they can keep communicating with friends late into the night, this can lead to disrupted sleep and leave your children tired, grumpy, keen to skip school or have an impact on their learning.
A change in behaviour may also be clues to other issues such as cyberbullying or grooming, so it pays to ensure your children feel they can share problems with you. Assure them that can talk to you about any problems they come across online, and that you won’t take their device away if they ask you for help. This is often a barrier for young people seeking help from parents.

OPEN DAY TARANAKI DIO – Wednesday 25 September – call in anytime between 10 am and 2 pm
There will be the opportunity for personal tours of our school campus and boarding house and have any questions answered.
Due to a lot of interest from families considering the options for secondary school education for their daughters for 2020 and beyond we are looking forward to hosting our second Open Day for the year. The first round of enrolment offers for next year have been made and interviews are ongoing for a limited number of places available at all year levels in 2020. There has also been a huge registration of interest for 2021 enrolments. We anticipate that there may be a need to prioritise day girl applicants for the remaining spaces available in 2020 and for 2021.
The following is a helpful link for any families wondering about opportunities for boarding allowances:

Our annual scholarship programme for Year 9 students will also be open for applications later this month. If in the meantime you have any queries please do not hesitate to be in touch with us.
Kind regards, Fiona Green, Principal
