Update and Next Steps: In-Person Learning and Instruction 2020-21
On September 21, 2020, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department released an updated version of the COVID-19 Prepared: Reopening of Santa Clara County K-12 Schools for the 2020-21 School Year. Based on the revised local Public Health Department guidance, Superintendent Dr. Carrie Andrews updated the Board on Cambrian School District's progress the past two weeks, needed adaptations for gradual reopening, current parent and staff survey results, and some next steps/recommendations in supporting the return of students to school campus for in-person instruction.
Cambrian School District has already begun a gradual reopening of students coming to campus:
Cambrian Extended Day program has been in operation for 6 weeks successfully cohorting.
We have established four locations for child care for all Cambrian Staff during the instructional day in stable cohorts.
Starting Monday, October 5th, high needs students from our schools are returning for in person targeted support during distance learning.
In person 1:1 services and assessments started in September for some Special Education students.
Cambrian School District gradual reopening of students coming to campus:
We are still moving forward to phase in our special day preschool and special day classes, but we have had to move the start date out. While the target dates for these classes are being adapted, families in these specific classes will be contacted in advance for preparation for the return to in person.
Dr. Andrews shared that given there are various perspectives as it relates to returning to in person instruction the intent of the recent community and staff survey was to get an overall assessment of individual readiness. Based on the recent survey results and updated Santa Clara County Public Department Health requirements for schools the recommendation was made by Dr. Andrews to slow down the reopening and bring back an adapted timeline to the Board for approval at the October 15th Board Meeting.
The Governing Board unanimously agreed with that recommendation to revisit the approved timeline for returning for in person instruction, consider adopting a revised timeline and take action at the October 15th Board Meeting. A phased in gradual approach is still emphasized in moving back to in person instruction. Please note, TK-1st will not be starting on October 19th and will be pushed out to a later date. Once a new start date is approved it will be communicated after the October 15th Board Meeting.
We had over 40 individuals in the Cambrian community shared their opinions during the public hearing portion of the meeting. The comments provided much appreciated inputs regarding school reopenings moving forward.
