Battle of the Synonyms/Equations
Showing students the power and specificity of words
Grade Level: K-12
Big Idea
Directions
1. Choose a general adjective from a book you’re reading, a mentor text, a science term, etc.
2. As a class, brainstorm (circle map) synonyms for the word. The more the better.
3. Fold index cards in half. Write each synonym on half of the index card and give to pairs, individuals, or small groups (depending on number of synonyms).
4. Hang a string from one end of the room to the other end. One side should say “low intensity” and the other should say “high intensity”. Students, pairs, groups take turns placing their synonym on the string according to intensity.
5. Once all synonyms are hung, encourage debate around rearrangement of synonyms. Use the following sentence frames if needed:
· I agree with ______ because…
· I disagree with _____ because…
· I think the word _____ should go here because_____
6. Post the synonyms somewhere in the room. You could even hang them from top to bottom on a board for ongoing additions and position swaps. When To Use
Variations
Battle of the Equations – come up with a math equation. Students create different strategies to solve the equation. Rank according to efficiency of strategy.
Battle of the Numbers – come up with a number. Students create equations to equal that number. Rank the equations according to efficiency. Discuss which are most efficient/least efficient and why.
