The Ashe County Schools SHAC Committee and Why We Care

The SHAC Committee is made up of a group of school personnel, parents, and community members working collaboratively whose primary goal is to ensure our students and staff are given opportunities to be healthy and provide a healthy school environment. We understand that this year has been different than any other. With isolation, quarantine, and education changes, our educators are under more stress than ever before. In our attempt to help, this newsletter has inspirational words, mind reset links, healthy recipe ideas, and self-care tips and tricks.
Big picture
Everyone needs a little downtime to re-focus to be at their best; for themselves, their families, and their students. Self-Care can be as simple as making a favorite drink (sweet tea), sitting in a comfy chair with a blanket, and not do anything for 30 minutes. Or maybe finally reading that book you keep putting off. Self-Care is making sure we make ourselves a priority. We cannot give to others if we are running on empty.

Here are some quick, fun, and easy self-care ideas:


  • Try positive affirmations
  • Write a list of at least 5 things you are grateful for
  • Take a bubble bath
  • Try a few yoga poses
  • Take a walk or easy hike
  • Buy yourself that item you have been wanting
  • Friend Zoom session
  • Listen to your favorite music
  • Cook your favorite meal
  • Make your bed
  • Random act of kindness
