From the Staff and Students of Stonybrook Middle School, We wish you a wonderful holiday!

Student Safety is Important to SMS

Going off school property at lunch time is not permitted for our students unless they have a note. Crossing Highway 12 (Brandt Street) is dangerous and must be done with extreme care. Students should be encouraged to use the crosswalk available rather than jay-walking (and even if their light is green, they should make sure traffic has stopped!). After School: Adult crossing guards are positioned at the intersections of McKenzie and Brandt, and Reimer and Brandt. Please encourage your child to make good use of this safe route while walking or biking to school. While crossing the street, children should walk their bicycles/scooters across, not ride them across.

Drivers: When dropping students off along Lumber Avenue, please do not allow them to run across the street. This creates dangerous situations for your child and drivers who may not see them. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students safe!

Cold Weather Reminders!

Dress Up

Please make sure that your child is dressing for the weather. Toques, mitts, scarves, boots and ski pants are all important for kids to stay dry and warm! SMS Staff encourage students to dress appropriately when they are heading outdoors. We will keep students inside when the temperature drops below -28. So far we have not had that kind of weather so we've had lots of time to enjoy the outdoors!

Bus Delays

The HSD Website contains information regarding Bus Delays ( All school buses that are late for whatever reason will be posted on the site. The Bus Transportation Department does not call individual homes when buses are cancelled or running late.

Parent Notification of School Closure

In the case of school closure or the cancellation of bus service throughout HSD, parents will receive a phone message from the division’s information call system, as well as, several announcements will be made between 6:00 AM – 8:00 AM on a variety of local and provincial media outlets, including: AM 1250, Mix 96.7,, and CJOB. Information will also be posted regarding school closures.

8M Enters Sumdog Contest!

I am one of the many students who took part in the Sumdog* contest. As we progressed through the contest, it became more than just a friendly game, it became a fierce competition. We learned a lot in those few days, answering as many questions as we could. Excited and motivated, we worked hard to make our way to the top of the leaderboard. For example, two of my classmates stayed in at lunch to answer more questions. Talk about dedicated!! When the contest finally came to a close, we made it to second place! Sadly, we didn't get first, but we stayed determined, and that's all that matters.

* Sumdog's educational games are used in thousands of schools worldwide. They motivate children to work on maths, reading and writing.

Need Help with Homework?

In its efforts to continue supporting parents and students, Manitoba Education and Advanced Learning has developed a new website that offers homework support to middle years students.

The "My Learning at Home" website,, provides links to over 200 videos and animations that explain challenging concepts in the areas of Mathematics and Science. Selected specifically for Grades 5 to 8 students, each video and animation has been annotated and organized by grade level to correspond with the curriculum.

We hope that "My Learning at Home" proves to be a useful resource for middle years students as they work to succeed in school.
