Volume 2, Issue 13 - November 9, 2018
Dear Families,
Christa Copeland, Regional Coordinator for Boone County Schools Mental Health Coalition, presented on Wednesday during our PTSA meeting about self-harm in adolescents. Her conversation was around what self-injurious behaviors look like, what to look for as a parent, tips for talking to your students about self-harm, and some helpful resources. If this is a topic in which you are interested but missed the presentation, we have attached it below. Please, take the time to look over it at your convenience. If you have questions about this topic, you can always contact Christa (cbhgg6@missouri.edu ) or our outreach coordinator, Erin Maynard (emaynard@cpsk12.org)
In addition, based on the conversations we were having last week at Gentry related to Red Ribbon week, a parent brought to my attention that the Department of Mental Health currently has an anti-drug campaign focused on underage drinking and prescription drug misuse by 12-20 year olds. If you are interested in this topic, HERE is the link.

8th Grade Field Trip to the Columbia Area Career Center
On November 14th, 8th grade students will get the chance to tour the Columbia Area Career Center located on the RBHS campus to get a first hand look at potential course offerings for their Freshman year. Students will start the day with an informative presentation about the Career Center in our Gentry Cafetorium from 8:00-9:00 am. They will then be bused to the CACC for a tour of their facility and classrooms followed with lunch in the RBHS cafeteria. Students can either bring money (or use their lunch account number) to purchase a student lunch in the cafeteria or they may bring a lunch from home, but will need to carry this with them throughout our tour. Students will return to Gentry by 12:15 in time for them to attend their 7th and 8th period classes. Our 8th grade students always enjoy this trip and the chance to start thinking about what lies ahead for them in high school.

As we try to remind you every week, your child will be OK if they are uncomfortable for a few minutes a day. We, as adults, do it all the time!

Jaguar Basketball
Now that fall has finally settled in and the temperatures have dropped, please consider joining us one evening for a Gentry basketball game. Our 7th grade girls/boys season has already started and our 8th girls/boys games will begin next week. Ticket prices are $3 for adults and $2 for students. If your student plays on one of our basketball teams and you will be frequenting most games, you may want to consider purchasing a Family Athletic Pass. You can either purchase this pass at the GMS Main Office or at our ticket gate on game day. This pass costs $50 and will admit a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 children) into each CPS game (both home and away). Tournaments and out of town games are excluded. The best part is, all of the money that is collected from this pass stays right here at GMS and goes to support GMS athletics. Hope to see you at one of our games!
