Long line during Dr. Heggerty Night was worth the wait!
So much was learned from the visit with author Aaron Reynolds
In his student assemblies, he described the authoring process and how an author presents books to their publisher. He also shared that he has never personally met the illustrator of his book Creepy Carrots, and very often an author and illustrator never get together. We also learning that even after 390 rejection letters from publishers, Aaron did not give up on writing children's books! He now has published 23 books and has five more that will be published in 2015 and 2016.
Many thanks to our families who attended our Dr. Heggerty Reading Night. In an effort to share what was happening in the moment I also sent out a number of Tweets via @EdgeEagles.

Important Learning from Visiting Firefighter
On Thursday, October 23rd, Mrs. Seidelman’ kindergarten classes had a special visitor for Fire Safety month. Mrs. Seidelman’s brother-in-law, Firefighter Pete Bendinelli from the Calumet City Fire Department, visited to teach kindergarten about what a firefighter does and fire safety. Fireman Pete showed the kids a slide show that included pictures of him working at the firehouse. They learned that firefighters not only fight fires and help people out, they also have chores to do at the firehouse. Every day they need to wash the fire engines and fire trucks, as well as clean the firehouse just like we clean our houses. Fireman Pete also showed pictures of different firefighter uniforms and firefighters working. Kindergartners were also reminded by Fireman Pete how to be safe around fire by not playing with matches, lighters, or fireworks and to make sure they have working smoke detectors in their houses. They even got to practice stop, drop, and roll!
Thank you for your time in reading this Weekly Update...
You are valuable partners with us in the learning and growth of your child(ren)!!
I am truly looking forward to 100% attendance at parent/teacher conferences on Nov. 24 and 25, and I know that some families have made sure that alternate dates have been scheduled, so that they can meet the teachers! Our work together is important through face-to-face communication to ensure academic progress.
We are striving for all of our children to become ready for college and an enriching career!
Educationally Yours,
Mrs. Tanya Hughes
