THE AVIATOR
GRIT: Volume 8
Dear Roberts,
What is the difference between a thermometer and a thermostat? A thermometer reflects the temperature of the environment. It simply reacts to what’s happening around it. It mirrors what the environment is giving it. A thermostat, on the other hand, regulates the environment. It sets the standard. The environment changes around it.
Thermostat behavior occurs when we anticipate both problems and successes. It's when we see the needs before they happen. At Roberts, we continually seek to create an optimal environment to generate learning. How can we be thermostat teachers? In our classrooms, we must consistently check for understanding. The thermostat here at Roberts is always set to utilizing real-time data to pull small groups. Then, to create an optimal small group experience, we must personalize the instruction based on the needs of each student.
On November 1st, we will host annual district Instructional Rounds. Roberts Problem of Practice is using real-time data to personalize small group instruction. Many of our teachers pull small groups based on real-time data which is amazing. This year, we must focus on how to personalize within small group instruction. Thermostat teachers create small groups consistently even though at times, it may not look pretty. Remember, on the other side of small group instruction lies meaningful and personalized feedback.
Thank you for always being 70 degrees and sunny each and every day, despite the various storms in life. By making small group instruction about helping students make progress towards the learning standards, we will see results. You are all amazing. I am grateful for this opportunity to be your principal.
