The Principal's Desk At Sycamore
November 26, 2018
Dr. Crystal Cooper Thompson, Principal
Parents/Guardians,
We are hoping that your Thanksgiving was meaningful and memorable! We are eager to see your children on Monday! I am sure they will have great stories to tell while being away for a week. Please take a look at some of our pictures from our last two days before break! It was a busy one, but very fun!
International Day: Thank you also for ALL of your support the week before break. You are greatly appreciated for coming to visit our International Day parade on our Thursday preceding our break. With the weather forecast, it forced us to have our parade inside. Hopefully, next year, we will be able to have a much better forecast that will allow us to spread out and venture outdoors. Thank you to all who sent their students to school dressed with their cultures in mind. We have 19 languages spoken outside of the English language at Sycamore, which is very exciting! I have added a great representation of flags in our entry way and some world clocks to our main hallway to acknowledge inclusion and a world view. We hope that you take a look at our students' "culture hands" and these great new additions to our school. It looks amazing!
Kindergarten and Pre-K Feast: Thank you to ALL of our parents for helping to make our annual event a success. The students did such a great job in the gym and our new way of organizing this event was such a positive way to include all of you and we hope you were proud. We used to have this in the cafeteria, but due to several events that day, we moved it to the gym, where we had more room for you to see your child and participate. Also, this year, we had a new event with our Pre-K feast! What a sweet time also for our students and families. Thank you for joining us and donating so much great food!
School Events and PTA: Thank you for all of your support and participation this first semester of school. I had a parent ask about our Literacy Palooza event and parade that we have often had in November in past years. We moved that event to March, so that it could fit in with Dr. Seuss' Read Across America event. Please look for more information as we get closer to the date. Thank you also to all of our DADS who were able to participate in our All Pro Dads event! We had a great time and it was wonderful to have you in our hallways! You are always welcome!
Also, with our PTA being on hold right now, we won't have any PTA led events until further notice. We are hoping to get recharged in the coming months. We will keep you posted and look forward to seeing our PTA up and moving again very soon. Thanks for your patience!
Fundraiser Extended to 11/30/18: Many thanks for supporting our Krispy Kreme fundraiser! We are still taking last minute orders until this Friday, November 30th, so please feel free to get your orders in as soon as you can. This is very helpful to our end of year initiatives for our school.
How can I help?
At this time of year, you may be wondering about ways you can give back. We had a family donate five $100 Kroger gift cards to five of our Sycamore families. The families were extremely appreciative of this and it was such a positive way to show love to our school community. If you feel led to send the same sentiments to some of our families in our community, please contact me so that we can send some holiday cheer to some families who need it the most. Any amount is appreciated and gifts cards are the best means for helping. What a way to put a smile on someone's face!
Congratulations!
Sycamore was acknowledged along with five other Title I schools in the district and 83 schools in the state as the "Top 5% highest performing Title I school,"in the state based on our 2017 CCRPI score. We were eligible to apply for a National award and we are awaiting the results. We are so proud of our students and staff and hope that this year will also yield high performance.

Friendly Reminders
- All visitors will be asked at the door who they are and their reason for entering the building by our front desk clerk. Always have your ID ready to show every time. Vanessa Camacho-Chapparo is our new front desk clerk and is happy to join our team. Please be patient with our new district requirement that ensures a stronger and safe environment for our school community.
- We will begin our morning announcements at 8:45 AM daily and ask that all car riders are in their seats ready to begin their day prior to 8:45 AM.
- We are going to use Mypaymentsplus for all of our monetary transactions besides small fundraisers throughout the year. Please make sure that you sign up for this with the information below.
- We are infusing social emotional learning with our PBIS discipline program. Every classroom will have morning meeting daily where they will greet one another, share something based on a focused topic, engage in an activity and end with a morning message. This 10 minute activity every day ties to our AKS, but also helps to start the day off positively. Ask your child about the amazing experience.
