Thursday Thoughts
Second Grade
Dear Second Grade Parents,
We hope you had a lovely winter break! The kids were ready to come back and our photos below show their enthusiasm upon returning to the classroom.
In social studies, we learned about the science behind the Northern Lights (also known as the Aurora Borealis). The children performed a skit to act out how the solar particles travel from the sun for three days before coming into contact with the Earth, which has a magnetic core. The solar particles are drawn to the Earth's poles and collide with the molecules of the atmosphere, which then produces light known as the Northern Lights. Today we also created Northern Lights art with watercolors and pastels.
We had our Writer's Workshop celebration on Monday. Each child read his or her personal narrative aloud. Their books are on display in our hallway.
In math we focused on estimation, shopping for items under $100, and addition strategies for double digit numbers.
All book clubs read a version of Balto to support our Arctic social studies curriculum. The kids were fascinated by Balto and the other dogs and their mushers as they raced against time to deliver the antitoxin serum to Nome, Alaska during the 1925 diphtheria epidemic.
Have a wonderful weekend!
