Raising Resilient Kids: You are strong, You are brave, You are kind
Have you encountered those people who remain calm in the storms, who seem to bounce back after adversity, who make the lemonade from lemons? Researchers from multi-disciplines are studying the concept of resiliency and how individuals who have developed strong resiliency are able to adapt to adversity and regain positive mental health. Educators and parents are paying close attention to the tools and strategies that can foster resiliency in our children today.
Human Experience: Life
Dealing with change or loss, and adversity, is an inevitable part of life. At some point in our lives, everyone experiences varying degrees of disappointments, problems, or complications. Some of these challenges might be relatively minor, while others are significant. How we respond to these problems can help us develop important life skills such as resiliency.
Let them struggle but be present
Our children need opportunities to struggle in order to grow and develop important brain paths and life skills. I am constantly gently reminded by our amazing Kindergarten and grade one teachers and educational assistants when I dive in, ready to “help” a little one do up their zipper at recess. The ease of which I could save time and “help” is nothing compared to the absolute pride that comes from developing independence and being part of the “zipper club”.
The above example highlights that important message we send our kids when we allow them the space and grace to try, to stumble, to solve, to work through conflicts and peer relationships. All of these developmental milestones in an elementary setting helps prepare our students for the greater independence required for middle school and beyond.
Every day at Saint John XXIII, our staff help students gain important skills to foster resilience so they can be all they are called to be.
Some tips on how to develop resiliency: (Sherry,K.https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-resilience-2795059)
Reframe your thoughts: Resilient people are able to look at negative situations realistically, but in a way that doesn't center on blame or brooding over what cannot be changed. Instead of viewing adversity as insurmountable, focus on looking for small ways that you can tackle the problem and make changes that will help.
Seek Support: Discussing things with other people can also help you gain insight or even new ideas that might help you better manage the challenges you're dealing with.
Focus on what you can control: When faced with a crisis or problem, it can be easy to get overwhelmed by the things that feel far beyond your control. Instead of wishing there was some way you could go back in time or change things, try focusing only on the things that are in your control.
Building resilience in our kids will help them develop into the strong, brave, capable and empathetic humans we know they can be.
Blessings,
Mrs. Bonnie-Lynne Boehm, Principal
