Some of the produce this week comes from our wonderful friend Tracy Stuba and her local farm, Harvey's Garden. Tracy is the mastermind behind the new market we are part of in Columbiana - Harbel's Farmers Market at Vagabond Village on Rt. 14. You are invited to check it out on Fridays & Sundays (12-6pm) and Saturdays (10am-6pm, with vendors like GG on site there from 10am-2pm). Tracy and her crew of other fabulous farmers offer a wide array of fresh, seasonal produce there each day. Stop by and take in the bounty!

The local eggs come from chickens raised by Rachel Ashby, mother to our own Rachel's fiancé.

Number of crops ready and amount of harvest varies throughout the season.

We pledge to provide at least six items each week. If we have crop issues, we'll

supplement with produce from local farms. Some weeks will include

value added items like Jungle Jam, Salsa, and more.


Pineapple Sage

Pineapple sage flavored sugar is a subtle sweet treat to add to your tea, or to sprinkle over toast.

So easy to make! Just layer fresh pineapple sage leaves in sugar. Cover lightly and allow the leaves to infuse into sugar for a week or two. After that, brush through the sugar to retrieve the now-dry leaves. There may be some little clumps of sugar to break up with a fork or a mini food processor.

Feeling stressed? Need to relax? Lavender is often used as an aromatherapy agent to boost mood and promote sleep. While I am not sure if that actually works, I do know that enjoying some tasty lavender treats (lavender tea, lavender ice cream, lavender macaroons...) always brightens my day. Although making macaroons can be time consuming and rather fiddly, the two lavender recipes below can be whipped up lickety-split to enjoy during those hot summer days!

Farm Fresh Eggs

Eggs are versatile and inexpensive-ish. Grocery store eggs are tasty but straight-from-the-farm eggs are a whole different ball game! Perhaps the difference is in our mind, but they do seem to have brighter yolks and an even better texture than the ones at your local supermarket.

There are actually nutritional differences between farm fresh eggs and those from the store.
Studies show that farm fresh eggs have less cholesterol and saturated fat and contain
more nutrients like vitamin E, beta carotene, and Omega-3 fatty acids. This is according to a
Mother Earth News Study that has been verified multiple times. So, enjoy these little
nutritional powerhouses any way you like and feel healthy while doing it!


Use your oregano fresh or learn how to preserve it so you can enjoy this flavorful herb even longer.

Salad Mix

Nothing says "summer" like a beautiful green salad! This week, enjoy our assorted greens, including one of last year's favorites - amaranth passion - with an easy homemade salad dressing.

(Not familiar with that particular veggie? It is very cool! Read about it here: amaranth.)

In this salad container:

leaf lettuce, kale, pak choi flowers/stems, amaranth, dill, radish tops, purslane, & a radish or two

A bit of extra knowledge:

Pak Choi ~ Also known as Bok Choy. Whether unopened or opened, the bright yellow flowers and stems have a bold, mustardy, peppery flavor that pairs well with all sorts of savory dishes.

Radish Tops ~ Fresh, vibrant radish greens are a useful ingredient that can be served raw or cooked!

Fresh Dill ~ Herbs make great additions to a salad. A bit of dill really brings the flavor!

Purslane ~ Yes, it is considered a weed but so are dandelions and people make amazing salads, jellies, and wines with them! Purslane makes a nice addition to a salad and is a hot commodity at farmers markets all over. Here is an interesting article about this tasty green.
