Summary Of The Novel

Percy Jackson appears to be a regular 12 year old boy living in New York. He lives at his boarding school, Yancy Academy. His only family that he know of is his mom Sally and his mean step-father, Gabe. He has dyslexia, ADD, and often gets into trouble. He has a unique talent of being able to stay underwater for long periods of time. It wasn't until he took a class trip to a museum that he learns how special he actually is. At the museum he is led into a room by one of his teachers, Mrs. Dodd's. She tells him to confess to something or he was going to die. He has no idea what she was talking about. She then turns into a Fury, a Greek mythological bat like creature, and is about to attack him when another teacher, Mr. Brunner and his best friend Grover come to his rescue.

Percy eventually learns that she was looking for a lightning bolt stolen from the Greek God Zeus. Percy also discovers that he is the son of a Greek god himself, Poseidon, the God of the Sea. This makes him a demi-god, a child of a god and a human. Zeus, who is Percy's uncle, has accused him of stealing his lightning bolt and tells Poseidon if it is not returned by summer solstice there will be war. Percy is brought to camp Half Blood to train and prepare to go on a journey to get the lightning bolt back. There he meets other demi-gods like himself, some good and some bad. He sets off with Grover and a new friend Annabeth and along their way they meet Medusa, a Hydra, a Lotus-Eater and Percy's other uncle, Hades, God of the Underworld. They eventually find the lightning bolt and return it to Zeus. Percy finally gets to meet his real dad and discover the truth about himself.
