K12 Art Contest
K12.com is having an art contest and we want to see your student's artistic talent!
The theme for K12's 12th Annual Art Contest is CELEBRATE CULTURE!
We’re asking students to roll up their sleeves, tap into their artistic side, and create artwork that illustrates how they would celebrate culture. They could Illustrate a customary dance they perform, a food they eat on special occasions, the flag that represents where their ancestors are from, the games their family plays on Friday nights, or something else entirely.
You can submit multiple entries for your student, and the artwork can be realistic or abstract. Students can use paint, photography, or drawing materials or create a collage, a digital illustration, or a three-dimensional piece using clay, origami, etc.
View the full contest guidelines, and submit your student's entry at stories.k12.com. Be sure to enter by 5 PM (ET) on October 31, 2017.

Week in Review:
This week we continued to focus on main idea and supporting details. Students had the opportunity to write about their own "Important Thing". In Math for Kindergarten, we focused on counting and writing numbers. In 1st grade we practiced +1/+2 addition facts. We are working on becoming fluent with our facts. Ask your student what it means to be a good digital citizen and what things are appropriate and not appropriate to share online.
Looking Ahead:
Students will be finishing up their Important Thing writing and practicing skills learned in 1st quarter. Please make sure your student brings their headphones and mouse to Face to Face time
I look forward to seeing you at Parent/Teacher conferences on November 1st or 2nd.

Week in Review
Our Language Arts focus was on Physical traits vs. Character traits. Students have already chosen a Superhero. Last week was Digital Citizenship week. In light of that, we proper usage of photos and went to Photosforclass.com to find pictures of their superhero. We also worked on our number sense using a hundreds chart. Our 2nd Graders enjoyed the nice weather and went outside to discuss and work with simple machines. Our 3rd Graders took the Science MAP test.
Looking Ahead:
We’re wrapping up the quarter this week. In math, we’ll be using strategies to help us with our basic math facts. This is always an area we can improve upon. For Language Arts, we will be continuing our Superhero project by creating a poster detailing the physical traits.
*For our poster we will be using bighugelabs.com. Feel free to check it out and play around with it.

Week in Review: This last week we finished our Mission to Mars projects. Students reflected on the process and then created a SWAY presentation.
Looking Ahead: Full time students will be learning note taking strategies for research. Part time students will be filling out their Individual Learning Plan.
Weekly Online ELA Lessons: Online lessons are changing 2nd quarter (Oct. 23rd). Because of the influx of students, we are rearranging teacher responsibilities. Our high school English teacher will start teaching the online lessons. I will then take over teaching science. This will free up Mr. Gamble to teach his 7 math classes. Times will follow: 9:30 AM - 8th Grade Honors English, 10:30 - 6th Grade ELA, 11:10 - 7th grade ELA, 11:50 - 8th grade ELA. Mrs. Mendoza will create new Class Connect sessions that students will see Monday morning. All ELA questions can still be directed to me, as well as any new science questions.
