The VoiCE
April 2019
A Note From Principal Miller
Dear CE Families,
April means testing for our 3rd and 4th graders. During the first and last weeks of April, students in Grades 3-8 will be taking the NYS ELA and Math Assessments. For more information regarding these tests, link HERE.
April means baseball season. With practices going into the evening hours, try to keep routines as much as possible. Students need down time before going to bed and this should NOT include screen time. Research shows that playing video games or watching television keeps the brain up at night. "The brain creates a hormone called melatonin that regulates a person's sleep and awake cycles. Too much light, as emitted from video screens, at night can affect melatonin production and fool the brain into thinking the body isn't ready for sleep." Instead, use bedtime to get in your 20 minute daily reading time.
April means outdoors. Now that the snow is gone, get outside and play. Exercise is brain food. It helps with memory and learning. Get out there and play.
April means crazy weather patterns. Be sure your child is still wearing a warm coat to school. It is easier to have something to take off at recess during those cool afternoons.
April means Spring Recess (April 19-26). We will reveal our One School, One Book at our Morning Assembly on April 12th. Each student and staff member will receive the book along with many activities to celebrate the importance of reading daily. Be on the lookout for this year's book.
April means National Poetry Month. I leave you with this wonderful poem written by our very own 2nd grader, Logan Lord.
Spring
Spring is here.
Flowers blooming.
Grass is green.
Ducks swimming.
Spring is here.
I know it.

Many Thanks from A.C.E.!
Thank you so much to all the individuals who made ACE possible this year! From teaching classes, to volunteering your time, space and/or materials...all your efforts are very much appreciated. We ended up having almost 100 participants and somehow managed to keep the mayhem under control and the kiddos engaged. Our student population benefited from trying something new or honing a cherished skill in an enthusiastic and engaging environment. None of this would have been possible without you. Thank you for keeping this immeasurably worthwhile program alive!
