Lietz Math Olympiad Team Awarded Meritorious Award for 2019-2020 Season
In August, the Lietz Math Olympiad Team received a certificate honoring them as a Meritorious Team for the 2019-2020 academic year! Though the final tournament was canceled due to COVID-19, the team was challenged periodically during the school year with 5 timed exams. After tallying each team’s top 10 student scores, Lietz was found to be in the top 20% of almost 2,300 schools participating in the Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS)! We are very proud of these 4th and 5th graders for their hard work and extra effort throughout the year. The students met once a week for an hour to learn about fun and challenging mathematical problems and had problem sets to complete at home.
We would also like to thank the volunteers for spending their time teaching and reviewing homework and the teachers for allowing us to use their classrooms after school. Additionally, we would like to thank the wonderful parents for helping their children tackle these challenging concepts. The volunteers look forward to another year of Math Olympiad success and will be offering a virtual program for the 2020-2021 academic year. Look for more information in future announcements if you would like your child to join!
Edward "Ed" Stewart Hulden May 17, 1944 ~ September 14, 2020 (age 76)
Edward "Ed" Stewart Hulden of San Jose, CA passed away from cancer on September 14, 2020 at the age of 76 surrounded by his family. Edward was born in San Francisco, CA on May 17, 1944 to the late Merle Delmer Hulden and Rewa Hulden Hodges Lillie. He graduated from Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, CA in 1962. In 1966 he received his BA in History at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. He completed his MA in Health Science and Education at San Jose State University in San Jose, CA in 1968.
Edward was a beloved teacher at Lietz Elementary School in San Jose, CA for 33 years. He was well known for his outstanding contributions to teaching science and environmental responsibility. His passion for nature and science developed at an early age when he was in 4H and a Life Scout in Boy Scouts. He took great pride in sharing his love and knowledge of the outdoors, including watersports, with his students. He had a gentle heart, a calm demeanor, a humble spirit, and a great sense of humor which drew people to him. One of his greatest joys was teaching his nieces and nephew how to waterski. During his free time, he was an avid sports fan, following the Oakland A's, Golden State Warriors, and San Francisco 49ers. Some of his favorite pastimes were spending time at his Sonora, CA cabin, sitting outdoors observing his koi ponds, collecting whale sculptures and Native American artifacts, and building HO train sets.
Edward is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Hulden, and his two sisters, Robinette Hulden Barclay (Duane) and Christy Hulden Westmoreland (Dave). Additional surviving family members are his nieces and nephew, Katie Barclay Cowan (Christopher), Andy Barclay, Lisa Westmoreland (Adam), and Lori Westmoreland, and his great-nieces, Sadie Beth Cowan and Skye Mathes.
The family will celebrate his life at a later date. Donations in memory of Edward can be made to the American Cancer Society or a tree can be planted in Edward's memory through McCommons Funeral Home (mccommonsfuneralhome.com) partnership with American Forests. Goal Setting Conferences
Typically, fall conferences are held in November in conjunction with the Trimester 1 report card. These conferences include current academic levels, how your student is progressing through the grade-level standards, and an update on student study skills and work habits.
This year, fall conferences will look different in the Union School District. They will be held in early October and have a different format. These student goal-setting conferences are a chance for you and your child’s teacher to discuss your student’s strengths, areas of growth, observations, and how they are engaging with distance learning. It is meant to be a two way, collaborative conversation between parent and teacher on your child as a learner. It is a chance for you and your child’s teacher to communicate, answer questions, discuss student successes, provide a current focus and next steps. While academics can certainly be a component, there will be a greater emphasis on student learning styles, the distance learning positives and growth areas, and how, as a teacher/parent team, the student can be supported. Your teacher may use a goal-setting form, such as the one below, to help guide the goal setting conference.
Another change is the timing of the day these conferences occur. Teachers will be conducting conferences during the school day, after 10:00am. During this time, your child’s teacher will be assigning asynchronous and independent work. While still appropriate for your child’s grade and academic level, this work may or may not look different than the work your student typically receives. Additionally, while daily instructional minutes will still be met, the amount of assignments students turn in, along with the level of feedback, may also change. Your teacher may also choose to have students participate in special projects, activities, challenges, and theme days.
