Muskie Update

mock trial

Big image
The MHS mock trial team completed the season with two wins at the Burlington Regional on March 15. The team is waiting to receive an at-large bid to the state tournament on March 28 in Des Moines. The team tries a case in court and is judged by district and magistrate judges. In preparation, the team scrimmaged several teams from across the state and practiced daily.

Mock trial is designed to introduce students to our legal system by providing a challenging, academic competition. The program offers students an opportunity for personal growth and achievement, emphasizing the importance of research, presentation, and teamwork.

In addition to teaching students about contemporary public issues and the legal system, the program encourages teachers and students to develop learning partnerships with professionals from the community.

Lawyers from communities throughout Iowa contribute their time as coaches and judges at the tournaments.

Judges from Iowa's District Courts also participate. These linkages between the schools and the legal profession show students that the community is committed to their educational success.

Members of the Mock Trial team include: Saul Ocampo, Mollie Juehring, Destiny Zarpli, Samantha Taverna, Regan France, Callie Staker, Brina Kraft, Ximena Bernhardt, Chris Kenefick, Alexandra Sichterman, Jessica Ahluwalia, Seery Awbrey, Leo Galoso, Logan Gray,
Jiselle Fernandez, Will Kelly, Liz Utley,
Bailey Carter, and Laito Zarkpah. Mike Fladlien is the Mock Trial coach.

After the obstacle course, the students went back to class and prepared mint oreo shakes for their treasure hunt. Clues were handed out to staff in advance and students had to ask/read their request in order to get the clue. Then they had to read and follow the directions in order to complete the treasure hunt.
