James Taylor "Carolina In My Mind" Live on SiriusXM

Wellness Wednesday Topic: Back to Nature

We live in a beautiful state! North Carolina has incredible beaches, beautiful mountains, and everything in between. Fall is a particularly beautiful time of year to enjoy what our state has to offer, despite limitations of the pandemic.

This week in our SEL lesson, we learned about mindfulness. Mindfulness provides us opportunities really pay attention to what is going on around and within us. Mindfulness allows us to tune in to ourselves and our environments and gives us a break from the worries of the moment. Mindfulness moments let us reset our emotions to a more settled place.

As the leaves change this fall, use the sights, sounds and smells of autumn as part of your mindfulness routine. Notice the crunch of the leaves when you walk, feel the cooling air changes each day...whatever your mindfulness craves, you can find it this fall in our beautiful North Carolina.

Senior Strike!

Seniors will be getting something in the mail this week. Our school counselors spent some social-distancing time together on Tuesday and prepared a mailing for the Class of 2021. Keep an eye on your mailbox! The mailing included your senior conference meeting appointment, a mock diploma, and an updated copy of your transcript.

Two goals for this week:

  1. Review your transcript & notify your counselor of any issues.
  2. Put your senior conference appointment in your phone as a reminder or calendar event.

SEL (Social Emotional Learning)

This week's SEL lesson was on the topic of mindfulness. Mindfulness is all about attentiveness to what is going on around you and using that to quiet your mind. There are many ways to practice mindfulness, so each of us can find our "best fit." Consider how you can take a moment during your next family meal to practice a mindful moment together. Here are a few good options for the dinner table. Click here to learn more.

  • Hold a cold can or bottle of soft drink in your hands. Feel the coldness, and the wetness on the outside. Note the bubbles and taste as you drink.
  • If you are sitting, feel the chair under you and the weight of your body and legs pressing down onto it. Notice the pressure of the chair, or floor, or table against your body and limbs.
  • Hold a mug of tea in both hands and feel its warmth. Inhale its scent. Don’t rush drinking it; take small sips, and take your time tasting each mouthful.
