Attendance
First, Sunflower wants to thank all the staff, students and parents working so hard to make this school year a success! This year, more than ever, it’s important the school and families partner together. With our first semester under our belts, we thought this would be a good time to remind parents the importance of calling the school the morning that your child is absent. Here are some important tips and reminders:
- If your child is going to be absent from school, please notify the school before 8:30 am THAT SAME DAY. This will prevent the school from having to mark them as an unexcused absence.
- It is best practice to notify the school via email. Please email your child's teacher along with the attendance clerk in the front office ( office-attendance@usd368.org ) to let them know your child will be gone and how the absence should be marked (ill, out of town, etc...) To avoid a call from the attendance-dialer, be sure to include the office-attendance in your correspondence. When you email office-attendance using the email above, your email will go to the office and school nurse.
- When you contact the school, if you anticipate an extended absence due to quarantine, please note length of the absence then be sure to send a doctor’s note upon your child returning.
- If you are not able to email, please call the school at 913-294-8040.
Your partnership in notifying the school the day your child is absence, will help the school prepare for your child’s absence in organizing their missed work. It will also help families avoid unnecessarily receiving an unexcused absence letter from the school outlining state truancy laws.
Thank you so much for your continued partnership in making this a great school year!

January Mindset of the Month Home Challenge
We will be learning The Time is Now mindset during the month of January. The Time is Now mindset teaches us...
- To Embrace Every Moment (be above the line thinkers)
- Get in the Zone (focusing on the task at hand)
- Let Yourself be Vulnerable (be proud who you are, mistakes help us learn and to be comfortable with where you are in learning a skill and not worry about what others think)
- Act with a Purpose (think through positive/negative consequences before making a choice)
If your child practices one of these skills at home this month, take a picture and email it to Mrs. Wilson (lisa_wilson@usd368.org) Be sure to include your child's first and last name along with a brief description of how your child is practicing the Time is Now mindset at home. Once Mrs. Wilson receives your email, she will enter your child in a drawing for a chance to win a game to take home. The drawing will be done on February 1st so all emails must be received by the end of the day on January 31st.
Be creative and have fun! Some examples may include things like...your child creates a fair chore chart and then follows through on their chores, practices an interest of theirs or weekly spelling words, gets their backpacks/clothes/etc ready the night before so morning is easier, etc.
