The Pastor's Perspective

Reformation Today

We aren't celebrating much about Reformation Day this year. The All Saints Day service will be the focus for worship this week. Reformation Day is an important holiday that reminds us of what Martin Luther did back on Oct. 31st, 1517. We owe a lot to this courageous man.

You may remember, the Roman Catholic church in Luther's time was raising funds to rebuild St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. A practice developed of selling "indulgences" as a fundraiser. Indulgences were monetary offerings to the church that reduced the amount of punishment for a person in purgatory. Purgatory was understood as a waiting area for the dead to be purified before entering into heaven. An indulgence sped up the time they spend there. Johann Tetzel (a indulgence supporter) was quoted as saying, "As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs."

Luther objected to this doctrine saying, "since forgiveness was God's alone to grant, those who claimed that indulgences absolved buyers from all punishments and granted them salvation were in error. Christians must not slacken in following Christ on account of such false assurances." Luther wrote the "95 theses" and nailed them to the doors of the Wittenburg Church in Germany and thus began the Protestant Reformation in earnest.

His act of courage sparked an awakening across the continent and religious leaders and followers alike rebelled from the Roman Catholic church. A division that exists up until today.

No one likes splits. But sometimes a separation is necessary when there are irreconcilable differences. Protestants believe that even though we are split from the mother church, we are still one in the spirit. Who's knows what the future holds for us as Christians. Will we someday gather together?

As an aside, you might think that Martin Luther was a stuffy theologian. However, Luther left a legacy of funny insults that he used in serious debates with the leaders of his day. Here's a sample

Happy Reformation Day!

Each week, they met to discuss the previous week's homework, viewed a video relevant to the text in the book of Hebrews, enjoyed refreshments and fellowship. Stay tuned for future studies in which the women of the church are invited to attend. We'd love to have you join us!

Fall Pastor’s Class--“Ask: Finding answers to hard questions in a skeptical age.”

Wednesday’s 6:00—7:00pm, October 21st to December 9th

We live in a skeptical age. People express doubts about Christian faith in our complex world. Join us for this thought provoking 7 week study beginning on October 21. Rev. Zack Martin will facilitate the class. This new series was created by Bishop Scott J. Jones, the bishop of the Kansas City area, to address hard questions that all of us face when considering faith, religion, and the church.

Topics we’ll consider: Can only one religion be true? Why is there suffering and evil? How can I believe in science and creation? How can I believe in a God I can't prove? Can I trust the Old Testament? Are marriage, sex, and family life religious issues? Why do Christians disagree about so many things?
