What's Happening in Guidance Lessons?
Third graders discussed compassion, described as empathy in action, how we show compassion every day, and how showing compassion leads to friendship. We also talked about how to start a friendship by giving a compliment, asking a question, and finding something you have in common./ Tercer grado conversa acerca de la compasión, describiendola como empatía en acción, cómo podemos mostrarla cada día y como el demostrar compasión nos lleva a una amistad.
Fourth grade identified differing perspectives, how those perspectives can sometimes lead to conflict, a normal part of life, and how to take into account different perspectives in order to maintain relationships, components of a successful conversation, and demonstrating giving and receiving compliments.
Fourth graders also started a unit on emotion management. We explored the physical signs of a strong emotion, or ways our body tells us we are feeling angry, excited, anxious, or frustrated. We also looked at the physiological responses within our brain and where our brain activity is centered when we’re thinking and when we experience a strong emotion. We used the app SockPuppets to practice belly breathing, counting, and positive self talk in order to calm down. /
Fifth grade defined prejudice and talked about how building relationships with others through conversations can eliminate prejudices (ask your kiddos if walking to recess with someone commits you to them forever, or that you're purchasing a home together). We also discussed how to disagree appropriately by: / Quinto grado aprende la definición de prejuicio y platica acerca de cómo desarrollar relaciones con los demás a través de conversaciones que pueden eliminar prejuicios (pregúntele a sus niños si caminando al recreo con alguien les compromete por siempre o el comprar una casa juntos). Working to understand the other: "I understand you feel ___________ when ____________." For example: I understand you feel frustrated when I expect you to do your homework right after school. Or, I understand you feel irate when I eat the last piece of pie.
Lesson 2 / Leccion 2
Kindergarten through third grade focused on Reporting Bullying. Steps to Respect teaches students "The 3 Rs": Recognize Bullying, Report, or Refuse. Once students understand what bullying is, they need to problem solve to determine if they report or refuse. If students feel safe, they should refuse. This could be in a variety of ways, including standing up for the person being bullied or getting the person out of the situation, then reporting to a trusted adult. If students don't feel safe, they should immediately get out of the situation and find a trusted adult. You can continue this conversation at home by using this same language used in the curriculum and brainstorming with your child people your child can trust to talk to.
Fourth and fifth grade students continued the conversation by talking about the power of bystanders, those who witness bullying situations. We discussed the power that bystanders have to intervene, report, or perpetuate a negative climate. You can continue this conversation at home by brainstorming ways your child can intervene, including standing up to someone who's bullying others, reporting bullying, and helping the child being bullied report the behavior.
What can I do to help my kiddos with homework?
1. CHECK your child’s work & have them correct those that are wrong. Instant feedback is critical in mastering skills.
2. Talk with your child's teacher. They are there to help. That means go to parent nights, school activity nights, conferences, they have lots of suggestions, so go see them!
3. Use homework as quality time with your kiddos. Ask them if they want to go over their spelling list or read with them./ Use el tiempo de la tarea como un tiempo de cualidad con sus niños.
4. Schedule a set time for homework to be done every day. Routines work for kids, if homework is done at the same time, in the same place, every day, kids know the expectation.
5. Let your kiddos do their own work. Homework is practice, mistakes happen and that’s ok. Just see #1 after they're done.
Don’t make excuses for incomplete or sloppy work. Allow your kiddo to learn the consequences of his or her actions-it’s a learning experience that they’ll be thankful for in the long run.
