Message From Mr. De La Torre
Parents and community members,
My name is Mike De La Torre and I am honored to be serving as the principal of Hamilton High School. It’s hard to believe we are 4 weeks into the semester. While the start of the school year has been much different than years past, it is exciting to see students engaging in live instruction with their teachers. I am proud of the work that our teachers and students have done to make virtual instruction a reality. We continue to learn something new every day to support successful student engagement.
We have a couple new faces in the administrative team at Hamilton. I am proud to announce our administrative team with their respective student alpha split. Mrs. Dee Sillanpaa (A-DASH), Mrs. Amanda Cook (DAU-HUSS), Mr. Richard Baniszewski (HUY-MOH), Mrs. Tana Berrelleza (MOI-SEAW), Mrs. Michelle Daly (SEB-Z), and Mr. Brett Palmer (Athletics). The administrative team is truly excited for this school year and ready to support the tradition of success that Hamilton is known for.
The mission at Hamilton High School is to prepare students to be successful in their academic, personal, and professional lives. Student performance, during and after high school, proves that Hamilton High School is the place to be for a quality comprehensive high school education. In addition to our ambitious students, parent and community support allows HHS to be the best the state has to offer and compete with schools at the national level.
Husky Proud,
Mike De La Torre

Speech & Debate Update
While things may have been different from past years, Hamilton Speech and Debate managed to continue to succeed at NSDA Nationals. After the National Qualifying tournament was canceled due to the global pandemic and uncertainty on how to carry out the tournament, competitors were ranked based on their accomplishments in this last year. Based off their achievements this past season, Jillian Kahn qualified for Congress (competing Expository speaking as her supplemental), Claire Mullings qualified for the Arizona World Schools team (competing in Extemporary Debate as her supplemental), Nivea Krishnan for LD, Pinka Panda and Neha Shakir in PF, and Andrew Chen and Abdullah Virk in Policy.
Each competitor trained in their respective event with coaches from around the state. This is where being online worked to our advantage. Now meetings could be held with competitors across the state with no transportation time which allowed for more meetings. Some competitors trained in brand new events, such as Claire Mullings, who competed in World Schools, an event that takes students from across the state and forms them into 2 teams of 5 to represent that state and discuss a wide variety of issues.
Competing online was a completely unique and new experience for us and all the other competitors. We were assigned room assignments on our Tabroom account and then at a given time went to a website where we picked our event and then a tab for our room. Each “room” was a zoom call we logged on to, rather than knocking on the door and entering a room in real life. While sometimes there may have been lagging, wifi problems, and microphone dilemmas, the experience overall was the same as if we would have flown to New Mexicoin in the first place. Despite being online, it was just as easy to bond with our teammates from the state and our competitors.
Overall, Hamilton was awarded Debate School of Honor- placing top 40 out of the 1400 schools that competed at nationals. Claire Mullings finished in the top 44 in Extemporaneous Debate. Nivea Krishnan, who graduated this past year and is continuing her education at University of Southern California, finished in the top 40 competitors. Neha Shakir and Pinak Panda made it to round 10, finishing in the top 56 teams out of the 286 PF teams at NSDS Nationals. Hamilton is extremely proud of the perseverance and dedication of our students and we know our club will continue to succeed this coming season.
