HLCS Superintendent's Scoop

August 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians and Community Members:

I am excited, as the new superintendent of Houghton Lake Community Schools, to share the first Superintendent Scoop! My husband, Stan, and I have purchased a home in Lake Township and look forward to being members of this fine community! We have two sons, Nicholas (26) and Shaye (23), who are eager to enjoy the water and winter festivities Houghton Lake offers. We have all fallen in love with the area in a short amount of time!

My twenty-seven years in the educational field have provided me with a wealth of knowledge and experiences, however I also understand that no two communities or school districts are alike. That is why I am committed to learning about the communities that make up Houghton Lake Community Schools and discover what the community wants and needs from the Houghton Lake Community Schools. Equally important to me is building strong school-community relationships that benefit our students. Make no mistake, great schools have great communities supporting them!

To better understand the needs of our community, I will be hosting our first two "Town Hall Meetings" on August 15th in the Board Office located at the back of the high school. The first meeting will run from 8:00-9:30 AM and the other from 6:00-7:30 PM. This will be an open-ended forum that provides families and community members time to ask questions, share concerns and provide information. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided!

One goal for the District is to maximize two-way communication with stakeholders. The Superintendent Scoopwill be posted on the HLCS Web page (hlcsk12.net) and in the paper every three months; November, February, May, and August. Our Web page is being re-created for a more user-friendly experience, and we are looking into creating a District Facebook page. For Twitter users, please follow me, @JuBrownA, and keep up with HLCS and Great Things happening! Phone calls and emails will be returned in a timely manner, usually within 24 hours.

Important changes to the upcoming year include the Wednesday early release days and the bus Transportation Policy. Early Release days have been reduced to one Wednesday half day of school each month. As a result, full days of school will now dismiss at 2:55 PM. Safety concerns led to bus drop-offs being limited to two locations; a primary and a secondary stop.

As I transition to my new role at Houghton Lake Community Schools, I want to thank everyone who has so warmly welcomed my family and me. I look forward to continuing to meet community members and learn about the history of Houghton Lake Community Schools. But, most importantly, I feel honored to be leading Houghton Lake Community Schools! I have chosen a life of service and cannot think of a better place to live and work!

Sincerely,

Julie A. Brown

Wednesday Early Release and Transportation Changes!

Two changes that families need to be aware of include:

1. Wednesday early release days have been eliminated. Instead, only the first Wednesday of each month will be a half day for students. Student dismissal will be at 11:15 AM.

2. The Board of Education approved a change in the Administrative Guidelines for Transportation Policy 8600. A maximum of two drop-off locations for the school year. One primary stop and one secondary stop.
