Second Steps
Today’s Second Step lessons focused on managing frustration and anxiety and how to handle making mistakes. Key parts of the lesson are:
- Saying ‘Stop’ and naming your feelings are ways to begin to calm down.
- Everyone makes mistakes, but if you’re feeling strong feelings, it’s important to calm down.
- Using what you know about calming down can be applied to anxiety-provoking scenarios, including academic challenges.
Families can support this at home by demonstrating saying ‘Stop’ and naming feelings in response to scenarios, particularly when strong feelings are evident. Talk out loud about your feelings to demonstrate that we all have strong feelings to manage.

Unit Notes
Unit A
Unit A has been busy wrapping up our Holidays Around the World unit of study. We have had so much fun learning about other cultures. Encourage your child to share with you what they have learned. Friendly reminder to send your child with a healthy snack each day. Our classrooms are running low on “extra snacks” when one is forgotten. Please reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher if you are willing to donate a healthy snack to our classroom.
Unit B
Encourage your students to participate in spirit week! Snuggle up and read lots of books. Enjoy your winter break!
Unit B Winter Party Signup:
Unit C
In health class, students will be exploring growth mindset until Winter break. In January, the safety and basic first aid curriculum will be taught.
Unit C Fifth grade students will attend the CPS Fine Arts Extravaganza on Wednesday, January 4 (the first day back from Winter Break). We will leave school at approximately 9:15 AM and will return at approximately 11:30 AM and eat lunch as usual. Unit C Fourth grade students will stay at school.
Specialist News
Special Specials!
Next week all students will participate in Special Specials on Tuesday, December 20, and Wednesday, December 21.
This means that during the student’s regular specials time, they will participate in a combined specials class. P.E. and Music will be teaming up to perform meaningful movement to nutcracker music (and other holiday favorites), with an emphasis on rhythm, form, and FUN! Media and Art are teaming together to create winter Claymation/stop motion animation videos and in the upper grades, coding robots to do some painting! It should be a blast!
