BOCES 4 Science Updates

March 2022

What a year it has been!!!

Here we are after the midway point of the school year. The first half of the year went by like a blur and summer is just around the corner. I often hear that "this is a year like no other" -- and this year that seems to be true.

This school year has been full of challenges. We have experienced staff shortages and supply chain issues that have caused us to find creative solutions to get resource kits to classrooms. Throughout all of this, we continue to keep students at the heart of all we do -- knowing that our standards-based curriculum and inquiry based experiences help drive great instruction in classrooms throughout New York.

While we manage with our current reality, we also continue to look into the future. .

  • Our Science Resource Teachers have been working to develop assessments that parallel the upcoming 5th grade test to be first administered in 2024. These assessments will be posted to our website as soon as they are available.
  • New Districts continue to sign-on and lease our kits -- especially as we get closer to the new assessments in 2024. This prioritization of science in school districts has been amazing!
  • We will be offering a "Train the Trainer" session this summer. The goal of this is to help prepare science leaders in districts to facilitate BOCES 4 Science unit training sessions. In other words, we will provide science leaders with the training necessary to help them work with other teachers around our units of instruction. This will include a deeper dive into standards, science content, and how to set up a training with a group of adults in mind. These sessions will take place July 27th and July 28th (more info coming). These sessions are completely free. Participants will receive a BOCES 4 Science training credential and the free use of resource kits to provide training.
  • BOCES 4 Science is slowly returning to in-person training sessions, but we continue to support digital sessions. Attached to this Smore is a listing of upcoming Professional Learning Opportunities this spring. The summer/fall listing will be out later this year.
  • Finally, our Assistant Director, Mary Thomas, is retiring at the end of the school year. Her almost 30 years of service and leadership to elementary science education is unsurpassed. She has been one of the driving forces of BOCES 4 Science to help it become the amazing program it is today. We will miss her and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. However, that means we are looking for a new Assistant Director to help guide our future. Attached to this Smore is a small brochure with information about the position and a link to the job posting. Feel free to share with anyone and everyone who might be interested in joining our team.

Thank you for all you do to promote amazing science for all students. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you would like to learn more about our resources or would like to lease a unit for your classroom. I can be reached at

Again, thank you for your continued partnership..

Steven L. Montemarano, Jr.
