Message from Mrs. Deayon & Mrs. Sieminski
Thank you for a successful beginning to our distance learning this week! The efforts put forth by you, your amazing children, and our wonderful teachers have helped our children continue on their learning path. Your patience and persistence has been greatly appreciated as we adjust to this abrupt change in school structure.
We want to emphasize that your family's health and well-being is a top priority. Should you have any needs, please contact us at 816-359-4360. There are many staff members available to assist with resources, support and guidance as needed. See the information below from Ms. Frayer, our counselor, and Ms. Logan, our social worker.
Our teachers are focused on keeping your children engaged in learning each day! We trust that you, as parents, can lead your children to the "just right" level of task completion, schedule of their day and assisting with learning components that are being provided. Don't hesitate to reach out to your teachers with any questions or concerns.
In addition, administrators are available to help too. Students are more than welcome to reach out to classroom teachers, Mrs. Deayon or Mrs. Sieminski, if they have questions about their work. We can be reached at the following email addresses:
We will continued to post daily announcements on our Southeast website. You can find links to all of our videos in the "About our School" section under "Daily Announcements." See the picture below.

Updated Building Hours
In an effort to further align with the government stay at home order, the Southeast office is now closed. Thanks for understanding the need for limiting our physical presence inside the building.
All of our office staff will continue working from home. We will continue to be available by phone or email throughout the time that our school is closed, as all phone calls are being forwarded to us during the closure. We are happy to assist you, so don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything! Be watchful for the Southeast Star, occasional email updates, and fun ways to connect on our school Facebook page!
Remember, if you need food or supplies (including a distance learning packet), you can go to any of the Park Hill School that are serving food from 11a-1p Monday-Friday. The closest building for our families is Walden Middle School.

Counseling & Social Worker Support Spotlight
Hello, Southeast Families!
We miss you all and want to tell each of you that we are here for you! We are in the process of contacting the parents of students we were seeing regularly prior to Spring Break. We want to make sure that students who still need that support continue to receive it if necessary, and we will work with each applicable family to find the most appropriate way to connect.
If you believe this applies to your student and you don’t hear from one of us by the end of this week, please feel free to contact one of us. Using social distancing and technology to support social skills and social emotional learning might sound strange, but we are determined to find a way!
Staying Connected
We will be available by email and phone for any student or parent/guardian Monday through Friday at the following contact information from 9-11 am and 1-2:30 pm.

Do not feel stressed or pressured to complete and submit these lessons daily. These practice activities are designed to support and build upon the social emotional learning you’ve been working on this school year!

Habits At Home: Habit 5: Seek First to Understand Then to be Understood
Seek First to Understand then to be Understood means that it is better to listen first and talk second. By taking the time to listen to another person, you reach a higher level of communication. This habit is best approached by introducing listening as a skill that should be practiced. Learning to listen without interrupting and learning to listen with your ears, your eyes, and your heart will help children build a foundation for Habit 5. Simply put, we have two ears and one mouth so that we can spend more time listening with the intent to understand.
- To better understand how listening can help or hurt a relationship, try “pretend listening” with your child for a few minutes. Your child will be frustrated. Explain what you were doing and discuss how your child felt. Now have your child ignore you when you are talking. Discuss how it makes you feel when you are ignored. Finish the discussion by thinking of ways to let the other person know when you feel you are not being truly listened to. Remind your child that this is also an example of Think Win-Win.
- Body language can be even more important than words. Play a game with your kids where you each try to guess the other’s emotion (happy, sad, angry, frustrated, bored, etc.) without using any words, just body language.
- Demonstrate how saying the same phrase in a different tone of voice can give the phrase a completely different meaning. Try emphasizing different words in the phrase “I didn’t say you did it” and then have your child tell you how the meaning changed.

Do You Know A Park Hill Star?
The Park Hill Star recognition program was started in 2015 to celebrate support staff and teachers whose work is especially noteworthy.
The following is an overview of the Park Hill Star Program:
Our employees are the reason we are so successful here in the Park Hill School District, and we would like to recognize them for all they do for our students.
That is why we present the Park Hill Star award once a month to a pre-K or elementary teacher, a secondary teacher and a support employee.
Southeast Communication
You will find several ways to stay up to date on school activities throughout the year on the Southeast website , Facebook, and newsletters from your child’s teacher. You will also occasionally get an automated email or voicemail message sent to you by the school with important information and reminders. We know two-way communication is best, so please feel free to call or email with any questions you may have regarding your child’s education.
