Pregnancy Month to Month

Month 1
- Size of the fetus: 1/4 inch
- Comparison of the fetus to a common object: grain of sand
- Three aspects of development the fetus is experiencing: the egg is traveling through the fallopian tube toward the uterus, then the mothers egg and the fathers sperm meet and join- this means life is beginning! Then the ball of cells attach to the lining of the uterus, which means pregnancy.
- Two symptoms the mother might be feeling/going through: mother is now noticing she is pregnant by missed periods & pregnancy tests will show positive, & a hormone reactions.
Month 2
- Size of the fetus: 1/5 inch long
- Comparison of the fetus to a common object: kidney bean
- Three aspects of development the fetus is experiencing: beating heart develops, buds for arms and legs develop & the umbilical cord develops.
- Two symptoms the mother might be feeling/going through: common discomforts: tender breasts, vomiting and heartburn.
Month 3
- Size of the fetus: 3 inches long
- Comparison of the fetus to a common object: peach
- Three aspects of development the fetus is experiencing: fingers and toes are longer, bones begin hardening, & skin and fingernails begin to develop.
- Two symptoms the mother might be feeling/going through: breasts begin growing and changing & maybe gain 1-3 pounds.
Month 4
- Size of the fetus: 5.5 inches long
- Comparison of the fetus to a common object: mango
- Three aspects of development the fetus is experiencing: skeleton is starting to harden, sucks on thumb and roof of the mouth is formed
- Two symptoms the mother might be feeling/going through: shortness of breath, or breathing faster & feeling dizzy or faint because of the changes in there blood and blood vessels.
Month 5
- Size of the fetus: 6-9 inches
- Comparison of the fetus to a common object: cantaloupe
- Three aspects of development the fetus is experiencing: hair is beginning to grow, eyelids and eyebrows are not in place, & a greasy material protects the skin of the fetus.
- Two symptoms the mother might be feeling/going through: start to feel movement of fetus & breasts are growing much bigger (1-2 cup sizes)
Month 6
- Size of the fetus: 10-12 inches long, 1.5-2 pounds
- Comparison of the fetus to a common object: length of a banana
- Three aspects of development the fetus is experiencing: starting to put on baby fat, eyes are now open (but can only see darkness in womb), & taste buds begin to form
- Two symptoms the mother might be feeling/going through: painful squeezing in the uterus and abdomen & more shortness of breaths
Month 7
- Size of the fetus: 13-15 inches
- Comparison of the fetus to a common object: squash
- Three aspects of development the fetus is experiencing: open and close eyes, babies skin in wrinkled, & beginning to regulate body temperatures
- Two symptoms the mother might be feeling/going through: back pain & dizziness
Month 8
- Size of the fetus: 3-5 pounds
- Comparison of the fetus to a common object: honeydew
- Three aspects of development the fetus is experiencing: layers of fat are filling baby out, lungs are well developed, & body is producing chemicals to help baby breathe when birth arrives.
- Two symptoms the mother might be feeling/going through: swollen veins, legs & ankles, also stretch marks are visible.
Month 9: Final Stage
- Size of the fetus: 6-9 pounds
- Comparison of the fetus to a common object: watermelon
- Three aspects of development the fetus is experiencing: skin is no longer wrinkled, head is probably snuggled into the pelvis, & all organ systems are being completed for the development of birth.
- Two symptoms the mother might be feeling/going through: trouble sleeping & trouble holding urine
