Science Open House
By Maya Patel
Earthquakes PBL
For the Earthquakes PBL project, we had to create a house that could withstand earthquakes for Tony Stark. We could only use specific supplies to create our model, which included popsicle sticks, toothpicks, string, straws, and clay. Our model was tested on a shake table to see if it could stand during an earthquake. Also, each group had to create a Wiki page for their project.
Driving Question:
How can we, as stuctural engineers, build a two story house that will withstand seismic activity?
Atmosphere 30 Hands Project
The 30 Hands project was about the atmosphere and how humans impact it. The information on the slides was mainly about Climate Change, Global Warming, and the Greenhouse Effect. I enjoyed learning how the app worked, and making each slide.
Invention Convention
The Invention Convention was a project where we had to create an invention or inovation that uses a renewable energy source. This invention or inovation needs to solve an enviromental issue. Our group created a solar powered phone case. Our inovation solves the problem of air pollution. Air pollution is partly caused by the burning of fossil fuels. 86% of the energy we use in the United States comes from fossil fuels, so that is a lot of air pollution. The solar powered phone case uses energy from the sun, so it causes no pollution.
Favorite Unit
My favorite unit this year is The Atmosphere. I liked this unit because during it, there were lots of fun projects and we got to use different apps. Some activities that I enjoyed doing were the Layers of the Atmosphere, the group, and the 30 Hands Atmosphere project.
