Dear Mason Families,
Week #4 of the 2020-21 school year is in the books! We are excited that our learners who have elected to take part in traditional learning model this year will be coming back to Mason for face-to-face learning on Oct. 12th for Young 5s -2nd Grade and Oct. 19th for 3rd and 4th graders. Our staff has been working tirelessly to make sure that every procedure is implemented appropriately to ensure the safety of our youth. Please be sure to join our Mason Facebook page(@masonelementaryschool or click this link), Instagram account (mason_elementary) and Twitter (@masonelemGP) as we will be going live several times next week to give everyone updates on everything Mason related. We have a lot of new routines/procedures this year and we want everyone to be as informed as possible.
Families returning to Hybrid face-to-face on either Oct. 12th or 19th: you will be receiving communication from your teacher about which cohort your child(ren) will be in Monday afternoon. We considered multiple data points (keeping families together, learning style, students' strengths/weaknesses, etc.) when making cohorts. Please know we did our best to be as fair and equitable as possible. While one of the many factors was trying to keep students in cohorts by the A-K and L-Z format, that did not work out in some of our classrooms because the classrooms were not balanced appropriately. We were able to keep all family members in the same cohort and that was one of our main goals. Creating cohorts was a difficult process and a lot of hard work went into making them. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility.
Thanks for your support,
Dr. Bishop
Meet our "Teachers In Charge" - Angela Whateley, Lisa Aouad and Molly Collins
In my absence or when I cannot assist with a situation, we are fortunate to have three teachers in charge in the building to assist. They will deescalate situations, help students work out problems when they arise, contact families with updates and assist with the day-to-day operations when I am not available. Thank you, Mrs. Whateley, Mrs. Aouad and Mrs. Collins for your leadership and dedication to our community.
Here are a couple of items to consider when you are preparing to come back into the school environment in the next couple of weeks.
- A water bottle - students will not be able to use the water fountain for water
- 2 masks with your child's name on them
- Technology - Teachers will let you know if your child needs to bring their device to school daily
- School supplies - Label your child's supplies with their first and last name to keep track of their belongings. Students will keep their school supplies at school in their desk and community supplies will not be available. Please let the office know if your child needs certain school supplies.
- Baby wipes - Consider donating baby wipes to your child's classroom
- Tissue boxes - Consider donating boxes of tissue to your child's classroom
- Please label everything (clothing, backpacks, lunchboxes, snack bags, etc.) your child brings to school
- Students should not bring toys or recess items from home
If students bring hand sanitizer to school to keep in their desks it should have a cap that closes tightly and not have a strong scent.
Thank you so much for your time and support. We know this is a challenging time for all involved and we are dedicated to doing whatever it takes to make our learners' school experience safe and welcoming.

Face To Face Hybrid Plan Updates
Last week, the district approved the face-to-face hybrid learning plan. Starting Oct. 12th, students in OneGP Traditional will be coming to school on designated days. Your child's teacher will be sending you more communication next week about what cohort your child will be in. As always, if you have any questions, please reach out to the Main Office at 313.432.4403 or Dr. Bishop at bishopr@gpschools.org.

October Virtual Conferences
The link below will take you to the Sign-Up Genius links for each classroom teacher at Mason. Please click the link for your child's teacher and select a 15-minute slot that works for your family. If you have multiple conference times to sign up for, please do not schedule them back to back. We would like for you to leave a 15-minute block of time between each child so you can make it to your conferences on time; technology can be a challenge so give yourself some time in between conferences. Conference Sign up links will be active until October 5th at 6pm.
We are looking forward to seeing you virtually Wednesday, October 7th or Thursday, October 8th to talk about your child's progress.
