Definition and the cause
Syphilis is a bacterial infection that can be caught during sexual intercourse. Syphilis is caused by the bacteria called Treponema Pallidum.
Population Affected
Common in all races and in both genders. It happens in women around the age of 15 to 30 whom are sexually active and it happens in males around the age 15 to 54.
Stages of Syphilis
1st stage of Syphilis
a sore that can develop, it is also called a chancre.
2nd stage of Syphilis
it happens 6 to 12 weeks after infection. There are discolored spots on the hands and feet. You get flu-like symptoms
3rd stage of Syphilis
It happens 10 to 40 years after the infection: there is damage to the liver and brain, can get heart disease. It can result in death or paralysis
Prognosis: When syphilis is treated it can be cured no matter which stage you are on. That person needs to see his or her doctor a few months later to make sure that the infection is gone
Treatment
Antibiotics that are given to you from a physician will help cure this disease. It will not repair the damage that has already been done but it will stop it from spreading. You are not allowed to have sex until the disease is completely healed.
