Principal's message
Hello all!
So much happened since I send out the hard copy of our Bear Facts and today that I decided to write a new Principal's message. This weekend's news cycle has been busy, and I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that Lum is in full support of the AUSD policy, Everyone Belongs Here. Please participate in sending out the love by tweeting your thoughts to @LumBears with the hashtag #LumLoves. I would love to see how you are helping make sure that everyone knows they are welcomed and loved at Lum.
The Science themed Family Fun Night was awesome. The PTA meeting from the 18th was informative and exciting, and the Math Night led by our teachers was enlightening, albeit a bit poorly attended. It has been a busy January for parent and community involvement events!
We also had a Kindergarten information night and three tours for our prospective parents. I asked a few of our Student Council kids to join us on the tours, so the parents could hear the real scoop about our school. Our kids did such a great job helping on the tour! We visited all the Kinder hangouts: the three Kinder classes, recess, Media Center, the library, and the music room. The parents were so complimentary of our school and our program, it made me very proud to be the Lum principal!
A parent grabbed me earlier this week and said she wanted some information about school sponsored websites that her kids could go on during screen time at home. Look below for some thoughts.
Lastly, we are looking for a new PTA president. Kelly Scott has done an INCREDIBLE job running the show this year, but has timed out as you are only allowed to keep the same position for two years in a row. She will continue to be involved in a major way, but we need someone new to step in to the role. Are you interested? Come talk to me if so!

Office News
It is with great pleasure that we announce our new addition to the Front Office staff. Please join us in welcoming LaShonda Knox, our Office Assistant that has taken Chris Janvier’s position. LaShonda has been a loyal and very dedicated Lum Bear for the past 23 years and, needless to say, it’s been fun watching the children come into the office with surprised and happy looks on their faces as they realize that Ms. LaShonda is now in the Front Office. She will, however, continue to work with the children in the afternoon math classes at her old location … Room 15. So, let’s just say that we have the “best of both worlds” as LaShonda works at her new position as well as her continuing to “better” our children academically. We are truly blessed, aren’t we?
PTA NEWS
5th Annual Lum PTA Read-A-Thon: PTA is so excited for our Read-a-thon! Not only a fundraiser for our school, Read-a-thon is a great opportunity for our Lum Bears and their families to READ, READ, READ! From January 18 through February 1, students are encouraged to collect donations from family and friends, and to log their reading every day. Guest readers will visit classrooms to continue the reading fun. Furthermore, we will be collecting new and gently-used children’s books for the East Bay Children’s Book Project. Look for all the information and forms coming home on January 18. If you would like to help or be a guest reader, contact Kelly at kellyjoscott@hotmail.com.
Family Fun Night: Fun for all ages is guaranteed at our next Family Fun Night on Friday, January 27, 6-7:30 pm, in the Multipurpose Room. We will have lots of neat science activities to get us ready for Lum’s 2017 Science Fair. Bring dinner for the family or purchase pizza and baked goods sold by PTA. Popcorn and lemonade provided compliments of PTA. Families are asked to save and bring the following items needed for the activities: plastic bags, cardboard, empty toilet paper/paper towel rolls, paper grocery bags.
Dine and Donate at Lola’s: It’s time to eat some great chicken and support Lum PTA! Our next Dine and Donate will be held all day at Lola’s Chicken Shack on Wednesday February 1. All day long, a portion of your purchase will be donated to Lum PTA. Simply mention Lum PTA when ordering. Tell everyone you know! Lola’s is located at 1417 Park Street in Alameda.
TEACHER OF THE YEAR: Do you know a teacher who goes above and beyond in (and out of) the classroom? Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) is now accepting nominations for its Teacher of the Year program. Nomination forms are available on the Employee Recognition section page of AUSD’s website. Anyone can nominate a teacher; the deadline to submit nominations to the nominee’s principal is 3 pm on February 1, 2017.
DROP IN ART AT LIBRARY: Kids are invited to a fun, free event at the Main Library on Saturday January 28, 2-3:30 pm. Creative kids of all ages can come join the fun of creating their very own mini book!
Kids’ Movie Night at Lum: PTA is hosting Kids’ Movie Night on Friday, February 10, 5:30-8 pm in the Multipurpose Room. All proceeds will benefit the Lum Library and Media Center. Between 5:30-6 pm, parents can drop-off their Lum students for pizza dinner and the movie “The Secret Life of Pets” for only $15 per student ($10 each additional sibling). Pick-up time is 8 pm. Space is limited and kids must be signed-up in advance. Reservation forms will go home next week in the Wednesday envelope. You can also register and pay online at www.LumPTA.com.
2017 ALAMEDA SPELLING BEE: The 2017 Alameda Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Alameda Elks, will be held on February 4th, 9:30am-12pm, at Otis Elementary School. The registration deadline is February 2, 2017. ELIGIBILITY: All participants must be in the 4th-9th grades, and must reside and/or attend school in the city of Alameda. Prizes will be given to the winning spellers. The top winners of the Alameda Spelling Bee will be sponsored to participate in the Alameda County Spelling Bee, to be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017. For additional information—and to register—please visit http://alamedaspellingbee.org. (This is NOT affiliated with the Lum PTA Spelling Bee which will be held in March.)
ALAMEDA FAMILY SPEAKER SERIES: All are invited to Raising Resilient Teens, on Wednesday February 1, 7-8:30 pm, at the Lum Multipurpose Room. This engaging presentation delivers practical strategies for raising resilient teens. We take on a serious issue with a sense of humor and “real world” approach. Childcare provided for ages 5+. The Lum Crumb
Our Media Center teacher, Lynn Kinsey, keeps a pretty updated list of approved websites on her webpage. Here is the link- http://lum.alamedausd.ca.schoolloop.com/cms/page_view?d=x&piid=&vpid=1227679630890
Also, I love the site www.arcademics.com. Think arcade + academics. Really fun games that ALL reinforce basic math and ELA skills.
Lastly, I have to share www.artforkidshub.com. This is a great directed drawing website with step by step instructions that will leave you and your kiddo with an awesome hand drawn picture. They have a subscription service, but also have a bunch of free lessons that you can check out!
Enjoy!
2016-2017 Volunteer Requirements
We appreciate all our volunteers and what they do for Lum School. We thank you for your cooperation with AUSD Volunteer policies, as outlined below:
1. Volunteers must complete a volunteer agreement form each year and provide a copy of their driver’s license/passport to the office. (Volunteer agreement forms in office.)
2. Principal Woodward will perform a search of the Department of Justice website (Megan’s Law).
3. If you will be regularly volunteering in a classroom, or elsewhere at the school, the school will need a clear TB test result.
4. If you will be driving on any field trips, working unsupervised with students, or spending the night on overnight field trips, you must be fingerprinted. In addition, when driving, the required driver’s insurance coverage must be provided. (Insurance coverage forms in office.)
5. Fingerprinting instructions are outlined below, and fingerprints must be cleared at least a week prior to the field trip. This process may take up to a month, so start well in advance of the field trip:
a. Pick up a Livescan form and suggested Livescan locations list from the Lum office.
b. Arrange for fingerprinting with the Alameda Police Dept. or another facility on the locations list. Pay the required fees to the fingerprint facility.
c. Have fingerprints taken and return the Live Scan form to AUSD Human Resources.
d. Human Resources will inform the office when the prints have cleared.
e. Once fingerprints are taken, they are good for life!
We truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication shown from our Lum volunteers.
