Dear Parents, Community, and Friends,

Since the Waldo Canyon fire, our school, teachers, children, and families have been on a journey to discover what our Ute Pass environment has to teach us. Starting with the Mountain Academy for Arts and Sciences 6th Grade program (now expanded to include two sections), we've learned a lot about the critical links between academics and the arts and the imperative to connect our learning (and our hearts) to the outdoor world that holds us here together on this old Ute Pass.

Our new action plan has us taking meaningful, measurable steps toward making Outdoor/Environmental learning part of our building-wide programming. Our plan also includes powerful steps for ensuring every child is a strong reader and mathematician across the next few steps. Our first “leverage point” in our Action Plan is focused on Improving our Environmental and Outdoor Learning Systems. Each of our staff is taking a lead on this initiative.

Toward this first Leverage Point, we started the year with a whole-staff professional development focused on Leave No Trace Training and teacher-lead examples of standards-based, environmental and outdoor lessons. This year, we dedicated half of an existing FTE to a new outdoor/Environmental Learning Coordinator (the Marvelous Eric Wester). Since then, each day has been filled with the best, first instruction while making logical, meaningful links to topics that connect us to this world. This work expands, deepens, and adds value to our work to ensure the strongest readers, writers, mathematicians, artists, musicians, and human beings. Each teacher has taken the embers of the tragic Waldo Canyon Fire to kindle the fire of curiosity in the hearts of everyone who lives here.

  • Did you know that you’d be contributing to the health and wellness of our staff and students if you pursued a Substitute Teacher license to serve UPE this year?
