Professional School Counselor Update
Kindergartners, First graders, and Second graders are continuing to work on coping skills and we are learning and practicing problem solving skills. Please remind your child that there are many ways to try to solve a problem. (See the People Problem Solving Star) After trying to solve their own little problem several times, instead of tattling they should ask an adult for help. But, for big problems, such as safety issues, breaking big school rules and hands on others, students should always report the issue to an adult.
Last month we looked at a few specific life skills that children develop as they practice setting and meeting goals. This month we’ll lay out some strategies for parents to help your children understand, work towards, and meet both short- and long-term goals.
Choose realistic goals. Help your child understand the difference between both long-term and short-term goals, and also what’s attainable and age-appropriate. (Not everyone can be an Olympic athlete!)
Choose goals that are just outside of your child’s comfort zone. This helps them rise to and meet challenges, building confidence.
Set specific goals. Instead of, “I want to be the best basketball player on my team,” aim for a measurable goal such as, “I want to score two baskets or more each game.”
Break goals down. A long-term goal like “I want to raise my math grade by one letter this quarter” can be broken into smaller, manageable steps such as raising a grade first on a quiz, then a unit test, etc.
Set up checkpoints. Create a visual aid to check off weekly or monthly goals. Let your child be a part of setting up this system.
Involve the family. Make goal-setting a family effort! This focuses on cooperation instead of competition. Champion each family member’s individuality as you work together and support each other in meeting goals.

Spring Book Fair
The Spring Book Fair is coming! Mark your calendars for March 16th-20th.
We need volunteers! Please contact Mrs. Zenoniani at zenonire@pwcs.edu if you are able to volunteer. We will need help with set up, class preview, assisting shoppers, and packing up the fair.
Thank you in advance for your support!
