This is the first year of using Schoology in GE at Rice Lake, and I am working to make it an effective tool. In addition to being a way to build community, save paper, and experience digital learning, I am also working to see if this might be a effective way to report out student work and understanding at the end of each pull out. This year instead of sending out formal evaluations at the end of each pull out, I am using a system inside Schoology that allows me to award students badges. I have created badges that align to the outcomes of each pull out as well as behavioral expectations that students have the chance to earn. If they students have earned them they will appear on their profile page. At the end of the year I will be asking for feedback to see if you as parents feel this is an effective means of communication.
Right now I have enrolled students into Schoology courses that correspond to the GE pull out they have participated in. There is, however, another general Rice Lake Gifted Education course that ANY student can enroll themselves in. This course contains general information, as well as discussion questions, creativity challenges, and links to other fun, brain stretching activities. If students would like to join this course and hasn't already they well need the following code: ZTRWP-RX9V4. To join, click on "Courses" > "Join" > enter the code > click "Join".
If you have any questions about what Schoology is or how/why I am using it, please feel free to contact me!
Pull Out Groups for 3rd-5th
Young Scientist Roundtable
Please join us on:
Wednesday, January 13, 2016 from 7—8 p.m.
at Wayzata Central Middle School
305 Vicksburg Lane Plymouth MN 55447
Presenter: Dr. Terry Jones
Department of Physics & Astronomy, University of Minnesota
“Theory of Relativity”
Albert Einstein is famous for his Theory of Relativity, but many people don’t know that he actually developed two theories. The first is called the Special Theory of Relativity, which explains what happens to objects moving at speeds close to the speed of light relative to each other, but does not include the effects of gravity. Einstein later developed his General Theory of Relativity, which includes gravity and led to our current understanding of the Universe as a whole. Dr. Jones will focus on the Special Theory of Relativity, which is surprisingly accessible to students and forces us to think differently about time and
space. He will then briefly cover the General Theory of Relativity and how both profoundly important theories are used in nearly all of our current technologies.
