Barrington Updates 2/4/24
District Calendar Updates
- Calendar updates
- Tuesday, March 19 - spring voting day - no school for students
Because many schools are used as polling locations, there is no school for students on voting days. - Monday, April 8 - solar eclipse - early release
For the first time since 1806, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Ohio at approximately 3 p.m. on April 8, 2024. To eliminate the safety concerns involved with students being dismissed during the eclipse, and to allow families to experience this historic event together, there will be an early dismissal of 1 p.m. for the elementary schools and 1:30 p.m. for the middle schools, high school and Burbank Early Childhood School. Thanks to the Upper Arlington Education Foundation, all UA Schools students and staff members will be receiving eclipse glasses through the district.

Summer Academy 2024
Upper Arlington Schools is proud to offer an exceptional summer program for our students for the summer of 2024. Summer Academy 2024 will offer academic and well-being programming. All courses will be offered free of charge to students for 2024, thanks to federal funding. Mark your calendars for Summer Academy 2024 — June 3 - June 28 — with course schedules available on our website beginning March 8 and registration opening April 2.
The hUmAn Connection Festival
hUmAn Connection Festival - The hUmAn Connection Festival will be expanded to a 2-day event this year. The evening of March 6th will be an all-district community event for all ages. During the day of March 7th, UAHS students will lead an event for UAHS students and staff, only. Each session will feature interactive exhibits and cultural arts performances.
The linked Google Form is an application to host an exhibit during the March 6th celebration. This is ideal for K-8 students, PTOs, staff, and community groups. This form has an opening description of the event that provides more clarity and detail.
There is a separate Google Form for UAHS students to apply for an exhibit table. That form is available through the high school.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Denise Lutz (dlutz@uaschools.org) or Kristyn Anderson (kmanderson@uaschools.org).
Spring Break Food Support
The district is partnering with the Tri-Village Packers to support their Spring Break 2024 food distribution program. The Tri-Village Packers will distribute groceries to families with UA students for the days when school is not in session. The food will be provided at no cost to district families experiencing food insecurity who would benefit from additional food.
We know that spring break occurs during a season of religious and cultural holidays that impact dietary practices. Volunteers will try to honor any restrictions you share with us to support your nutritional needs while recognizing your obligations.
To sign up for this round of food distribution, please complete this form by March 1, 2024. Once registered, you will receive an order number allowing you to pick up your food at the Upper Arlington Senior Center on March 21, 2024, between 3:30 and 6 p.m. If you cannot pick up your food, arrangements can be made for delivery.
Please contact Kristyn Anderson in the district office with questions about this opportunity at kmanderson@uaschools.org.
Gifted Identification Process
Gifted Identification Process for Creative Thinking Ability
2023-2024 Information for Parents and Guardians
School districts in Ohio are required to identify students who are gifted in creative thinking
ability. Creative thinking ability involves characteristics such as imaginative thinking, a sense of
humor, risk-taking, and inventiveness.
Identification of creative thinking ability is a two-part process that is defined by the Ohio
Department of Education and Workforce. Students are evaluated for both cognitive abilities and
creative characteristics. To be identified as gifted in creative thinking ability, students must
achieve a minimum score on a cognitive test such as the CogAT and a minimum score on a
state-approved creative thinking checklist.
In February, 2nd and 4th grade students who earned the required minimum score of 112 on the
CogAT in December will be evaluated further with the creativity section of the Scales for Rating
the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students. Classroom teachers will complete the
creativity scale for each of their students who earned the required CogAT score.
You will receive notification in March if your child is identified as gifted in creative thinking
ability. Although the Upper Arlington City School District does not provide formal gifted
services for students in elementary school who are gifted in creative thinking ability, this
information is useful for teachers and may help you to make decisions about enrichment
opportunities that are available in the community.
While our district is screening 2nd and 4th grade students for giftedness in creative thinking ability,
students, parents, and teachers may refer a student for evaluation of giftedness in creative
thinking ability at any grade level. If you have questions about this process, please contact your
school’s Gifted Intervention Specialist or Jeanne Beaver, Gifted Services Coordinator, at
