Message from Principal Mosgrove
Dear Park Village Families,
I hope this message finds everyone well! In preparation for our soft launch of Distance Learning this week, our school distributed over one hundred chromebooks to our families on Thursday and Friday. It was really great to see so many of you…even from a distance!
If you were unable to pick up your device last week, please send an email message to mmosgrove@powayusd.com and we will work out arrangements for you to receive it.
Please note that we are really shifting from “optional” learning activities to a more structured
instructional program this week. While it will certainly not replicate a typical day at school, there will be assignments in reading, writing, and math along with daily independent reading. Also, be on the lookout for special learning activities from teachers like Mrs. Nellies and Miss LaDow. I’ve seen some previews and you will really enjoy them.
Good luck to everyone and please remember that we are all here to help. Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher, our counselor Mrs. Cardinale, Mrs. Simek or me with any questions.
Have a great first official week of Distance Learning and GO PENGUINS!
Best,
Michael Mosgrove
Principal
Family Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started: All things Tech Related
Q: How do I access my child’s MyConnect/Canvas account? What if we experience technical difficulties?
A: In preparation for distance learning, all TK-12 students should ensure they can log into Canvas (MyConnect). For help with password reset, username help, or trouble logging on, you can contact the IT help desk here.
Q: What if our family does not have any devices for our child to use? No Internet?
A: PUSD will be distributing Chromebooks at your child’s school IF you requested a device online on April 1st by noon on Thursday. Click here for the link and distribution schedule. For Internet resources click here.
Learning Expectations
Q: What should we expect in terms of learning time for our children at various grade levels?
A: At the elementary level, teachers will be providing learning activities for students in reading, writing, and math at the primary levels Monday through Friday - TK - 2 a total of 105 minutes and at the upper grade 3-5 a total of 150 minutes. A menu of optional learning activities will also be offered as well.
- At the middle school level, teachers will be providing students learning tasks/lessons twice a week, per course for 40 to 50 minutes.
- At the high school level, teachers will be providing students learning tasks/lessons three times a week, per course for 50 to 60 minutes.
Q: When should I expect to know what the learning activities for my child will be each week?
A: At the elementary level teachers will be posting their learning tasks/lessons on Canvas, week at glance by Monday at 9:00 am.
- At the secondary level, teachers will be posting their learning tasks/lessons in accordance to their site Distance Learning schedule.
Q: What is the purpose of “Office Hours”? What will “Office Hours” entail?
A: This is a teacher defined time frame where teachers will be available for additional support for students. Your classroom teacher will provide more information.
Q: Does my child need to complete all tasks assigned? What about grading?
A: It is important that all students work to complete all assigned tasks. At this time student work will not be given a grade. We are expecting more guidance from the state in this regard. However, teachers will be providing feedback.
Special Education Services
Q: How will my child’s IEP be supported through Distance Learning?
A: As PUSD transitions from optional learning resources to distance learning, we continue our commitment to supporting students with IEPs. Under the guidance of the California Department of Education (CDE) and the U.S. Department of Education, the District is collaborating with our teachers, providers, and support staff as we work to meet the needs of students with IEPs.
Q: What can I expect regarding Special Education services?
A: If your child receives any related services such as occupational therapy, counseling, speech and language, etc., each provider will be working in collaboration with site teams to align their service delivery models and determine how the team will be supporting areas of need during distance learning. This may include, but is not limited to, consultation with parent/staff, direct interaction with your child via virtual platforms or by telephone, and provided activities to be completed in between virtual/telephonic sessions.
Q: Who should I contact if I have questions about my child’s IEP?
A: PUSD recognizes the importance of student learning and engagement, which continues to take precedence during these uncertain times. Further guidance and communication will be provided to our Special Education teams within the next week in reference to the District’s IEP meeting facilitation and specific questions around timelines. In the meantime, please continue to access your child’s case manager as the primary point of contact related to his/her IEP.
Message from Your School Counselor
Just wanting to connect during this time. A way to stay healthy is to boost your immune system during fearful or stressful times.
It’s important to have a strong immune system at this time. How do you do that? Here are some ideas:
- Parents, kids will take their clues from you. Notice whether you are experiencing fear, anxiety or stress. Kids pick up on our feelings. Practice shifting your focus from fear to gratitude. Doing this gets your brain out of the fight or flight state.
- Practice empathy. Thinking of another takes the focus off you.
- Share with others what you appreciate about them.
- Laugh with loved ones.
- Spread joy to others.
- Turn off or limit the news. Watch something funny or entertaining.
- Journal. Put your thoughts and feelings on paper or in a journal. Don’t reread unless you are doing a “Gratitude Journal”.
- Set up a daily routine to make life predictable. This soothe our brain.
- Sing a little repetitive song. An example is the one by Allison Davies on YouTube called: Every little cell in my body is happy….. It’s about 3 minutes long.
- Notice and shift your self-talk to be more positive. Our brains don’t know the difference between what we imagine and reality.
- Our thoughts determine our feelings. We can choose our feelings by monitoring our self-talk.
If you have concerns please e-mail me at jcardinale@powayusd.com I will get back to you Monday through Friday in a timely manner.

PUSD 2020-2021 Continuing Student Registration is open now
The online Continuing Student Registration website is open April 1 - April 30, 2020. We must receive a completed digital packet for all returning students. This will allow for proper placement of your student for the 2020-2021 school year. This annual digital process will allow a family to complete one single “family” packet instead of completing one packet per student. Packets can be completed using any computer, tablet or smartphone with an internet connection. If you do not have access to any computing device or internet connection, your student’s school will provide access to complete the packet.

Please notify your current school as soon as possible if you do not plan to return to PUSD for the 2020-2021 school year. Thank you for your attention to this important process.

Help Build the Library's Collection with New or Gently Used Books
By Shelley Fleming, Librarian
Are your shelves overflowing with hardcover picture or chapter books that your kids have outgrown or don’t want to read? The school library would love to receive them! One kid’s trash is another kid’s treasure. It’s a great way to reduce and recycle. It also helps stretch the library’s very limited budget.
The library accepts hardcover children’s books that are in good condition and are age-appropriate for kindergarten to fifth grade students. No paperbacks, young adult or adult books, please. Place your donations in the collection box just inside the library door.
Families can also donate new library books from our Amazon Wish List (http:// a.co/2ZY3HZ) throughout the school year with the Library's Birthday Book Club program. Learn more about it at https://www.powayusd.com/en-US/Schools/ES/PVES/Academics/Library/Library-Home
Thank you very much!
