The Silent Killer

Where does stress start?

Two different types

Stress is the body's way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. Stress can be brought on by both bad and good things in our lives; eustress and distress.

What are the causes?

What is eustress?

Eustress is moderate or psychological stress that is interpreted as being beneficial for the person experiencing it.

Examples of positive stressors include:
  • receiving a promotion or a raise at work.
  • starting a new job.
  • marriage.
  • buying a home.
  • having a child.
  • moving.
  • taking a vacation.
  • holiday seasons.
  • retiring.
  • taking educational classes or learning a new hobby.

What about distress?

Distress is extreme anxiety, sorrow, or pain; this is detrimental for the person experiencing it.

Examples of negative stressors include:
  • the death of a loved one.
  • filing for a divorce.
  • losing contact with loved ones.
  • hospitalization (oneself or a family member).
  • injury or illness (oneself or a family member).
  • being abused or neglected.
  • conflict in relationships.
  • bankruptcy/money problems.
  • unemployment.
  • sleep problems.
  • children's problems at school.
  • legal problems.

Who do I talk to?

Stress can become very dangerous. If you or someone you knows is finding it difficult to cope with life's demands, please speak to a doctor.
