NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
Term 2 Week 8: 18 JUNE
Dear Parents and Staff
As we come to the last two weeks of our school Term, I have been reflecting on the many successes that we have experienced since our return to school at the end of April. Whilst it has been quite a journey, I have been so impressed with the children’s ability to adapt to the changes that have been imposed upon them and the responsibility and resilience that they have shown as these changes have occurred. The staff, too, have never experienced the challenges with which they were confronted and have, not just coped, but, rather, have excelled in creating a safe, stimulating and academically challenging atmosphere for the children.
We keep hearing terms such as “unprecedented” and “new-normal” to describe the way in which our world will be governed as we move into the future. The children and staff at Notre Dame have, during this time of unrest, inspired me to be very confident about our future and I pray that, through God’s grace, there will be much more to celebrate.
SACRAMENT OF PENANCE
Parents would have received work packages and a PowerPoint presentation earlier this week. In asking for work to be returned to school by next Monday, we acknowledge that this is a relatively short timeline, however the need for this is due to us only very recently receiving permission to celebrate the Sacrament. Hopefully we will be able to display the work in classrooms to heighten the children’s experience during this most special time in their Spiritual journey. The children will receive the Sacrament from Fr Quynh over the next two Wednesdays in our Parish church at 9.30am.
- Year 3M 24 June.
- Year 3P 1 July.
Children are to wear their full winter uniform as is the case on all Wednesdays and we welcome 2 members of each family to join us for the Liturgy. Unfortunately, physical distancing regulations preclude us from having more family members in attendance.
At school we are praying for the children who are to receive the Sacrament of Penance and I invite families to do the same in their daily prayers.
SEMESTER REPORTS
Parents should have received an email during this week regarding modification to the Semester One Reports and would also have received information regarding accessing the Reports online a couple of weeks ago. If you have not received either of these communications or are experiencing any difficulties with the setup to access the Reports, please contact the school office.
The Reports will be available to access online from 4.00pm on Friday 26 June.
The Parent Teacher Online (PTO) link to book meeting times with teachers will be available through the school website from 4.00pm on Monday 22 June.
ANOTHER STEP BACK TO NORMALITY
As of the commencement of next Term on Monday 20 July, we will be returning to the 3.00pm dismissal time for all children from Pre-Primary to Year Six. Parents of Pre-Primary children will continue to be able to use the drive through pick up near the church and we will maintain additional staff on duty to facilitate two lanes for the collection of children.
The 3 Y.O. and 4 Y.O. Kindergarten children are to be collected at 2.45pm from the Kindergarten.
The school gates will continue to be opened at 8.00am and, whilst parents are very welcome to come into the school grounds, I encourage you to make drop off as quick as possible so that we are able to continue to operate with the reduced traffic congestion levels.
REMINDER
The last day of Term will be Thursday 2 July as we have our Parent Teacher interviews on the morning of Friday 3 July. Children and staff are invited to wear neat casual clothes on the last day of school to celebrate our highly successful Term together. There are many in our broader community who continue to struggle financially and many of the support agencies have had their funding sources severely restricted, so I invite families to make a gold coin donation for the privilege of their children wearing free dress, if they feel they are in a position to do so. We will pass any funds raised directly to the local chapter of the Society of St Vincent de Paul.
A DANGEROUS PRACTICE!
It has, again, been brought to my attention that parents continue to double park in Daly Street to drop off and collect children. This is a very dangerous practice and I encourage parents to use the much safer option of dropping and collecting children in the drive through that is supervised by staff each day.
ADVANCE NOTICE
The school will conduct an emergency evacuation fire drill on Monday 22 June. The office will be closed on Monday from 10.00am to 10.30am.

YEAR 5 CLASS NEWS
And just like that we are almost at the halfway point of 2020 and what an interesting year it has already been! With online learning commencing at the start of term, to having all of our students back in the classroom, it has certainly presented us with some challenges along the way! However, the students have maintained a positive attitude throughout this term and should be proud of their efforts during this unprecedented situation.
Technology
This term in Technology, the students had an opportunity to construct a robot and present it to both Year 5 classes. They were challenged with creating a robot that served a particular function! We had robots that could complete homework, robots that were music DJs and there was even a robot that could read minds. The students were highly engaged in this activity and enjoyed listening to other people’s presentations.
In Art, the students have studied the creative and surrealist work by Salvador Dali this term. They have been creating surrealist pieces of Art throughout the term and have completed several pieces of work which highlight 'surrealism.' We hope you enjoy some of the displays they have created!
Humanities
In Humanities this term, the Year 5 students having been researching information about North and South America! They have all presented some fantastic work about their chosen country from either continent and have researched about different climatic regions, native animals and famous landmarks!
Holidays
As the July holidays are fast approaching, the students are beginning to sense the excitement of having two well deserved weeks off! We hope that everyone continues to stay safe and hopefully some of you might even be able to get away and explore our amazing W.A!

RECYCLED BATTERIES
Did you know that batteries can be recycled?
Yet 94% of all batteries are placed into our regular rubbish bins.
Here at Notre Dame Catholic Primary School we want to get better at recycling batteries.
We have always had a large battery recycling container in the library, but now we have smaller collection containers in every classroom!
Please collect any “dead” batteries at home (an old take away container with a lid is great for collecting!) and send them in to school for recycling. Your child can drop them into their classroom container.
This is another awesome thing we can do for the environment!
Thanks for being “waste-wise”.
