Florence Twp. School District - 2020-2021 - #37
WHAT'S HAPPENING
Mask Reminder
Based on the Governor’s announcement to relax masking among students due to extreme weather conditions, please be advised of the following updates and clarification:
- Florence Township Memorial High School is air conditioned. The classrooms are all temperature-controlled, and extreme weather conditions do not exist in the building. Therefore, students will continue to wear masks while in the building as required by Executive Order 175. Face masks will be optional if students are outside or on a bus that is not air conditioned.
- Riverfront School and Roebling Elementary School vary regarding air conditioned classrooms. Students in classrooms that are air conditioned are to continue to wear masks. Masks will be optional for students in classrooms that are not air-conditioned due to the extreme heat, humidity, and heat index today. Face masks will be optional if students are outside or on a bus that is not air conditioned. Students are encouraged to maintain 3-6 feet social distancing to the maximum extent practicable.
As the year comes to an end, the health and safety of our students and staff still remain our utmost priority. We will continue to monitor the weather conditions and seek guidance from the Burlington County Health Department. We do ask that you continue to monitor your child for any symptoms of Covid-19. We will continue to monitor the weather conditions and will update the school community with any changes that may be necessary as we wrap up this last week.
Prom Update
We were recently informed by The Madison that, due to a noise ordinance in Riverside Twp., our Junior/Senior Prom will need to run from 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. (as opposed to from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.). Although we’re surprised by this news, we’re still incredibly grateful and excited to be able to provide our students with this very special event. Along those lines, I’d like to thank Mrs. Pereda, Mr. Pereda, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Zucchero, and Mrs. Sadar for all of their hard work in making this Junior/Senior Prom possible for our students.
Please do not hesitate to contact our Class Advisors, Mrs. Sadar, or me with any questions regarding our upcoming Junior/Senior Prom.
Thank you, as always, for all of your help and support!
Sincerely,

Florence Township Community Garden Gets “Community” Effort
On a hot & humid Sunday afternoon, several volunteers worked together preparing the township’s community garden for the summer growing season!
Several months ago, two groups inquired with the township expressing interest in supporting our resident growers that utilize the garden each year. Florence Township Girl Scout, Trinity Hughes-Crawford committed to weeding and preparing each garden bed in addition to adding other amenities to the garden to earn her Silver Award. Trinity has participated in Zoom meetings with the township and along with Scout Leader, Kim Dembowski and her parents has worked diligently to ready the plots for the local gardeners.
At the same time the township was contacted by Florence Township Memorial High School Science teacher and No Place for Hate Coordinator, Ms. Annie Levine who shared that her students were going to take part in a horticulture project, growing vegetables from seedlings thru the winter and would like to donate them to the garden area. Students learned about the growing process of various vegetables and the importance of sustainability. On Sunday, June 6th our two groups came together bringing the plants to the fresh soil of our garden.
Mayor Craig Wilkie and Councilman Jerry Sandusky joined the group as both Trinity and the high school students talked about their projects and how they each arrived at this stage. Mayor Wilkie and Councilman Sandusky shared stories about the history of the property and thanked our youth volunteers for their commitment and dedication in supporting this effort.
For several years Councilman Sandusky and members of council have supported the garden since its addition to the community. Resident Patti Dixon and her family have served as a
point of contact as interested individuals have visited looking for openings at the garden. We thank Mr. & Mrs. Dixon for taking on several maintenance tasks at the garden. This weekend our volunteers were happy to help take on some of this important role.
These months of planning by many came to fruition this weekend and it was a wonderful gathering of individuals from our community that brought the garden to life. Thank you to our public works staff for placing new weed barriers and stone walkways throughout the garden. Thank you to Trinity, her family and her Scout leadership for the hours and hours of work at the garden to prepare for the new plantings. And thank you to Ms. Levine and her students for taking part in such a great project and coming out on such a hot day to plant the vegetables. It is our understanding that the veggies will be donated to local food pantries when they are ready to be picked. We are looking forward to watching this annual partnership between our Girl Scouts and High School Students and all of the fresh & healthy veggies it will provide for others to enjoy!
