Gladiator Greatness
The CCHS Gladiator Band received an overall rating of Excellent, 2nd place in the A Class Division, 1st Place in Drum Line, 2nd Place in Drum Major, and 3rd Place Color Guard at the
42nd Annual Greater Atlanta Marching Band Festival at the Rockdale County High School
competition of the school year on October 12th. Follow our amazing band on Facebook.Clarke Central's graduation rate hit 83.7% last year, surpassing the state average of 82%. Read more about this accomplishment in The Flagpole.
CCHS students and members of Athens-Clarke County 4-H Michael Campbell (9th), Sammy David (10th), Luke Krohn (10th), and August Pearson (10th) competed in Georgia 4-H's annual Wildlife Judging state competition. The team won 1st place at the state level and will be headed to the national competition next July. They will also be recognized at Georgia 4-H's State Congress next summer as Master 4-Hers for winning a state-wide competition.
Everett Vereen, Theron Camp, and Elena Gilbertson-Hall were named National Merit Scholarship Semi-finalists. Semi-finalists represent less than 1% of high school seniors and are selected based on scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Read the full press release from CCSD.
Michael Ondaatje, award-winning author of The English Patient, spoke with Clarke Central students on October 25th. This special event was organized by the iliad Literary/Arts Magazine and UGA's Wilson Center for Humanities and Arts. Read about it in the Odyssey Newsmagazine.
Senior O'Brien Barnett was selected the Athens Banner-Herald’s High School Football Player of the Week on October 10th.
Clarke Central students enrolled in the Great Promise Partnership program develop job and academic skills while working part-time at local businesses. These students attended REAL Skills Day at UGA on October 9th where they participated in sessions on overcoming adversity, resume building, time management, and leadership. Read more in UGA Today.
The Humane Society Club hosted a table at the West Broad Farmers Market Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 26. Lynsey Alvarez and James Marroquin handed out candy and dog treats and provided brochures and information from the Athens Area Humane Society on fostering pets, adopting, and the upcoming Chili Cook-off Charity event.

Clarke Central students, including junior Maya Cornish, participating in the Athens Peer Court continue to make a difference in their community while gaining valuable experience in the legal field. Read about this program in UGA Today and the Athens Banner-Herald.
The Community Service Club, boys basketball and wrestling teams, HOPE Club, and JROTC volunteered their time and energy to support CCHS's Adopt-a-School partner Milledge Avenue Baptist Church unload pumpkins for their annual sale. See pictures on Facebook.
The Gladiator Raiders finished 3rd overall at The Georgia State Raider Competition. There were over 55 teams in 3 categories. Out of five events, the Glads finished 2nd in the Tire Flip, 3rd in the Rope Bridge, 3rd in the Raider fitness Challenge, 3rd in the Cross Country Rescue, and 4th in the team run. This was CCHS's best finish ever in the Georgia State Raider Competition.
Sophie Caillault, a junior and member of the CCHS Honors Chamber Strings, will advance to the final round of All-State Orchestra auditions in Atlanta this January after successfully auditioning at the district level last month. Way to go, Sophie!

Mayor Kelly Girtz held a talk with Mr. Dean's students in Mell Auditorium on October 15th. Students asked a variety of questions pertaining to government, homelessness, legal matters, and life in Athens-Clarke County.
Congratulations to sophomore Jackson Forrester, who won the Big Bass award at today's Georgia High School Fishing tournament on Lake Lanier. Weighing 5.37 lb, Jackson's fish was the largest one weighed in out of a field of 130 boats (260 students). Check out pictures on the team's Facebook page.

Athens Free Medical Clinic
Students with Medicaid and/or no insurance and low family income may be eligible for the Athens Free Medical Clinic.
An attending doctor and medical students come to the school about once or twice a month to provide services. For an application, drop by the nurse's office or contact her at rabbiv@clarke.k12.ga.us.
