Eye Opener
First off, there are three different types of pre-natal alcohol exposures. They are: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Alcohol Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (ARND), and Neurobehavioral Disorder Associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (ND-PAE). Research has shown that there are many misdiagnosed children with ADHD, ODD, CD or ASD when the children really have a form of pre-natal alcohol exposure. Reasons for this include: 1) many symptoms are similar; 2) Unless a foster child, most mothers don't report pre-natal alcohol use; 3) doctor's don't feel comfortable determining this disorder, it is NOT curable!
Some scary statistics provided by the Center for Disease and Control (CDC, 2017) include: 1 in 20 school-aged children have had pre-natal alcohol exposure. Indiana alone has 8,200 with FAS from age birth-50 and 32,900 people with ARND.
Pre-natal exposure stunts or prevents different parts of the brain from developing correctly. These malformations vary depending on the babies gestation period when alcohol exposure occurs. Different types of problems include: hyperactivity, poor attention, literal thinking, poor social skills, impulsivity and downshifting, perseveration and difficulty transitioning, poor memory and fabulation. Do these behaviors sound familiar? They sound like some of our children with Autism or Emotional disabilities or ADHD...................
I am thrilled to say that the interventions to support those with this disorder and all other disorders and disabilities are things we have in place at North Side. These interventions included exercise, movement, sensory items and activities, directions given in concrete sentences, and use of terminology they understand. A few other interventions that stuck out with me are providing plenty of water to drink, saying "Look at this" instead of "pay attention", and when asking questions to ensure they understand, we should ask them to "Show me" or "Tell me in your own words". We should not ask them to repeat or parrot the question......this doesn't tell us that they truly understand.
I have gratitude for each and every one of you knowing how much you value and support our students social and emotional learning and model that in all you do!
