What we will be learning about this week.....
Math: The students will be learning fractions this week. In second grade we are responsible for laying the foundations of fractions and the common language; such as, equal parts, halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, etc. Students DO NOT learn numerator and denominator in second grade or use the symbols 1/2, 3/4, etc. Fractions are a very abstract skill, so it is our job to make sure they get the foundations first then they can build on their knowledge. Students will be using models and hands on tools to work with fractions throughout the week. Later in the week students will be completing a guided spiraling sheet and an individual spiraling sheet.
Science: The spotlight in science will be natural versus man-made resources. Students will distinguish between natural and man-made resources and provide examples. Mid-week students will investigate materials around the room and compare them.
Reading: The big idea in reading this week will be a continuation of the culture research project. Students will be completing a "culture gram" on the following cultures: Italian and African.
Writing: Word study continues for the second week. A speed/glue sort will be on Friday the 18th. We will also begin talking about Revising and Editing our writing in our Write Source practice books.
