FAIRVIEW ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER
4th Quarter is Here!
We are back in school and ready for a fantastic 4th quarter. Our amazing Fairview staff has worked hard to build a safe learning environment and help students get back into the rhythm of being back on campus.
PEAKS, our state testing, will be underway next week. Testing is very important in obtaining accurate data on student achievement. so we can be prepared to meet specific student needs! It's been a tough couple of years and we want to get learning back on track! With so many months away from school, attendance is more important than ever before! Please make sure students come to school on time every day!! Together, we can maximize student learning in a caring, safe environment. Thank you so much for being our partners in educating your children!
Best Regards,
Diane Teekell-Opitz
Principal
PEAKS TESTING BEGINS MONDAY 3/29!
Reach new PEAKS of learning! Grades 3-6 (at Elementary Level)
Each spring, Alaskan students are provided an opportunity to show what they know. When students show what they know, teachers and parents can partner to promote student success. For more information on testing: https://www.asdk12.org/PEAKS
- PEAKS (Performance Evaluation for Alaska’s Schools) is a computer-based assessment for students in Grades 3-9 (English language arts and mathematics) and Grades 5, 8 and 10 (also science)*
- PEAKS will be administered to ASD students during the weeks of March 29-April 30
- This state-required assessment provides students the opportunity to show their understanding of important skills in these content areas at their grade level.
*NOTE: The science assessment is a new test based on new State of Alaska science standards. The tested grade levels have been updated to grades 5, 8 and 10. This year, science will be field tested by all students in grades 5, 8 and 10. For more information, please review the State of Alaska Department of Education PEAKS New Science Assessment FAQs.
Please see the ASD Assessment and Survey Calendar for the complete schedule of the ASD comprehensive system of assessments.
HELPFUL HINTS FOR SUCCESSFUL TESTING
➥ Talk to your child about testing. It’s helpful for children to understand why schools give tests. For more information about the importance of taking the PEAKS test, visit ASD's PEAKS information page.
➥ Encourage your child. Praise him/her for the things they do well. If your child feels confident, he/she will likely do their best on a test. Children who are afraid of failing are more likely to become anxious about test taking.
➥ Ensure your child attends school regularly. Testing days are important days to be at school on time to allow for the least stressful testing experience for your child. Avoid scheduling appointments on testing days.
➥ Eat a healthy breakfast the morning of a test. Hunger can distract a child from the task at hand. Many ASD schools serve breakfast. Learn more at https://www.asdk12.org/breakfast
➥ Help your child get a good night’s sleep the night before a test.
THERE MAY ME CHANGES TO THE TESTING SCHEDULE AND MAKE UP TESTING MAY OCCUR BEFORE 4/15. Please check in with your child's teacher with any question.
