What Does it Do?
The Checks and Balances system makes sure no branch of government becomes to powerful. Each branch has a check on the other two branches to balances out the power. Even the two houses of congress has checks on each other.
What checks does each branch have on each other?
Each branch have many checks on each other. If congress pass a law the president has the power to veto it but if congress has enough votes they can override the veto. That's a check the Executive branch have on the Legislative branch and the Legislative has on the Executive. In the chart below it shows what kinds of checks each branch has on each other.
