Winter Weather Preparations
Canby School District
Prepare Ahead of Time
If inclement weather strikes, do you know how to find out about school delays, closures, or snow routes for buses? This quick newsletter will give you all the information you need to know to be prepared.
Delay & Closure Notifications
When inclement weather indicates a potential need to close schools, the district works closely with Student Transportation of America to determine the condition of area roads for travel. When a trial run of our routes indicates unsafe travel, the district will announce school closures or delays.
The district has several ways to communicate with our parents, students, and families in these situations. Read on for your options for timely notification:

When Will I Know?
The need to close may become apparent the evening before. When possible, Superintendent Goodall will announce the closure/delay the previous evening so that parents have an opportunity to make arrangements for childcare, etc. Otherwise, when morning road conditions are treacherous, the Superintendent makes the decision by 6:00 a.m. to close or delay the start of school.
Sometimes the weather is fine when buses start out but may become worse after students are in school. In this case, we notify the media of an early dismissal and use the same notification process as outlined above. The decision to release students early will be made by 11:30 a.m. at the latest. Parents also receive a phone call from school when an early dismissal decision is made. The buses then deliver students back home or to the emergency drop off location indicated on the student enrollment form.
During inclement weather, the district’s first priority is the safety of its students and staff. We strive to make the best decision possible with the information at hand in a timely manner. When the conditions are questionable, the district will choose the safest option available. These decisions are not made lightly as we value each and every instructional day for our students. We appreciate your patience as we work through these difficult decisions.
Snow Bus Routes
In preparation for any weather-related transportation issues, Student Transportation of America has proactively created several snow routes for areas that are typically affected by inclement weather. Student and staff safety is our highest priority when weather impacts transportation.
When the weather creates potentially hazardous driving conditions, STA will drive routes to determine if buses can safely transport students to school. The district will follow its winter weather procedures in the event of inclement weather. Because conditions can change quickly, it is at the bus driver’s discretion as to whether a road is safe enough for travel. If a driver determines conditions are too dangerous, the driver will notify STA dispatchers who will communicate with families about any alternate transportation plans.

Childcare Plan
Please remember, if the school district is closed for the day, there is no supervision for students and all buildings are closed. This is for everyone's safety.
