COSMIC RAY EXPERIMENTS
A number of cosmic ray experiments were performed in all of Mrs. Fletcher's Science classes today. Cosmic rays are particles that come down to the surface of the earth from the upper atmosphere, stimulated by higher energy particles from space. Students learned how to use simple, portable cosmic ray detectors in order to detect what affects the distance of double interactions affect their coincidence of these particles. Kenneth Cecire, a QuarkNet National Staff member at the University of Notre Dame, Department of Physics and Astronomy will be doing a presentation in South Africa on the use of these small detectors in the classroom as we are one of the first to have this experience.
Thank you Mrs. Fletcher for providing this experience to our students.

INTERACT CLUB NEEDS YOUR SERVICE IDEAS!
The Interact Club is a service organization that is connected to the local Rotary Club. Specifically, we are affiliated with the Paw Paw Lake Rotarians. Our aim is to complete acts of community service throughout the school year in our local area.
I am reaching out because I have a group of about fifty (50) 7th and 8th graders who plan to perform community service once a month in Watervliet, Coloma, and the surrounding areas this school year.
We are in search of community service activities and opportunities in our local area.
If you have a need or an opportunity for any or all of these students to participate in any service within your organization, please reach out to me. Students are available on weekdays after 3:15 PM and on weekends, as well.
We would like to get more involved in servicing our local communities.
I can best be reached by email at cpowers@watervlietps.org but also by phone at 269.463.0730.
I am hopeful that you might have an opportunity for us within your organization and look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you for your time.

WATERVLIET PUBLIC SCHOOLS SAYS GOODBYE TO LONGTIME PARAPROFESSIONAL, SANDY SPAULDING
At the Watervliet Public Schools Board of Education meeting last evening, there was one item of business that was a little bit bittersweet -- bidding farewell and fond wishes for a happy retirement to longtime paraprofessional Sandy Spaulding.
Sandy has worked in the district since 1998 and her time here has impacted hundreds of children's lives. Both High School Principal Christina Powers and Board President Bill Spaulding (who is also Sandy's husband) emphasized that it was the relationships Sandy built with the students she worked with and how much she genuinely cared for them and wanted them to succeed that made her such an asset to our district.
Sandy's absence is definitely felt in the high school building where she had worked and where she is missed by both staff and students. We wish you much joy in your retirement, Sandy.

Kenzie works for Jason’s company. We have two dogs, Sweetie, (Chihuahua/Dachshund mix) and JoJo, (Beagle puppy). Jason and I have been married for 24 years.

I attended Western Michigan University and hold a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Music Education.
I teach and direct the 6th Grade Choir, 7th-8th Grade Choir, Treble Choir, Concert Choir, and the 7th-12th grade Theatre Performing Arts class. I also assist in managing the auditorium, and I am the director of the musical productions.
In my free time I love to travel, knit, crochet, golf, and spend time with my family and friends.
I am actively involved as a vocalist outside of teaching. I am a member of the choral group, Chorllennium, and also the Peace Lutheran Sanctuary Choir in South Haven, MI. National Youth Tobacco Survey
Vaping is a crisis in our schools. The National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) indicates that while vaping has decreased over the last couple of years, 1 in 4 students still use e-cigarettes daily. Data from Truth Initiative suggests that 82.9% of teens use e-cigarettes over other forms of tobacco and that those “vapes” have at least 2x the nicotine as similar devices sold outside the United States. Unsurprisingly, the research from the NYTS suggests that our most at-risk students are the most likely to begin this habit and become addicted. Please talk with your child about the dangers of vaping.
SUMMER HEALTH CLINIC
On June 12, 2023, Holy Family Healthcare, Flood's Vision Center, and WPS Migrant Department teamed up to sponsor a Health Clinic. Students (and some adults) received physical, optical, and dental exams. Those who participated received home supplies, a health kit, and a book bundle. All ate healthy food at the clinic's cafe. WPS students - Ari Jimenez-Ramirez, Ana Aguilera-Gallegos, Judith Aguilera-Gallegos, and Karla Cervantes - helped translate, organize, and distribute the free gifts!

Girls Varsity Volleyball beats South Haven 3 - 1
Panther volleyball wins conference season opener against South Haven! In game one the Panthers captured the momentum early winning game one. In game two, three and four the Rams battled back but fell short. The evening consisted of a lot of long rallies and great out of system plays which contributed to the Panthers winning the match.
Panthers continue to prepare for their upcoming matches as they travel to Fennville on Thursday, Sept. 14th.
Tri-City Record’s Press Box Player of the Week: Daniel Mandujano
By John Oliphant
Press Box Player of the Week for Sept. 7, 2023 is Watervliet’s Daniel
Mandujano.
Dani is the top runner on the Panther cross-country team and has won
both of the team’s meets, so far. Two weeks ago he began the season
at the always hot and swampy Bridgman Invitational, posting a new
personal record (PR) of 17:17.1, and beating his nearest competitor by
nearly 30 seconds in a field of 95 runners from 16 schools. This is also
the fastest 5,000 meter time for a Panther since Ezra Troyer ran 17:18
and Gus Hinch ran 17:19 in 2019, and the 7th-fastest 5k time for the
school. Brendan Daly holds the 5k record at 16:26.
Last week Dani set another PR with a 17:12.2 finish at the New
Buffalo Invitational, again beating his nearest competitor by 40
seconds in a field of 57 runners.
Dani, a junior, is now in his second year running cross-country. He ran 20:49 in his first career race at
Bridgman last season, improving by three and a half minutes so far. He qualified for last season’s state finals
with a 17:45, and his current PR would have placed him in the top five of that race.
At this pace he’s likely to break the 17-minute mark in the next few weeks, and once he gets some
competition to race against anything is possible. Dani is also a member of the Panther track team where he
runs the 800, 1600, and 3200 races, qualifying for the state finals in the 1600 last spring.
Congratulations and good luck, Daniel!
Panther Ladies Place Third at Centreville Invitational
Racing for the second time in under 48 hours, the Panther ladies had a good team showing at the Centreville Invitational. Morgan Lowell placed 5th overall in a time of 22:23. Kimmy Romero also cracked the top 10 with an 8th place finish in 23:53. Ella Geisler and Gabby Wisdom also had strong races earning themselves individual medals. The next race for the squad is the first conference jamboree Wednesday in Parchment.
Mandujano Wins Centreville Invitational - Boys Team Places 6th
Running their second race in under 48 hours, the Panther boys had a good showing at the Centreville Invitational. Danny Mandujano made a strong move with about a quarter mile left to surge into the lead and win the race with a time of 16:53. Luke Isbrecht ran a season best time of 19:38 missing a new PR by only 1 second. Zeke Cardozo, Devin Geisler, and Dennis Frazier all put in solid performances as well.
Varsity Football falls to Berrien Springs 14 - 13
The Panthers hosted the Shamrocks of Berrien Springs Friday night and lost a heartbreaker 14-13.
After Watervliet took the lead in the 4th quarter, Berrien was able to dive and kick the Game-winner to seal the game.
Jacob Schaefer completed 22 Passes and 1 TD to Levi Getz. Kaiden Bierhalter had 10 catches on the night as well.
Carson Underwood lead the ground attack scoring 1 TD and gaining 72 yards on the night.
The Panther defense held pretty well all night but couldn't get the key stop in the fianl drive.

MARCHING BAND UPDATE
Since the end of June, the Watervliet Marching Band has been hard at work on their 2023 show entitled RITUAL. This show is based on Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring and original themes by Randall Standridge. Rituals often take place at special times and places and remind a community of aspects of its worldview and history. Our show seeks to explore our connection to earth and nature, offer remembrance and gratitude, and honor the tradition of singing, dancing, and ceremonial events.
With their band camp performance and two football games under their belts, the marching band is now gearing up to start their competition season. They will be giving their first full competitive show performance in Panther Stadium on Saturday, October 7th at 2:00pm. All are welcome to come to this Friends & Family Performance. Right after that, the band will be attending the District VI Marching Band Festival on Tuesday, October 10th at Paw Paw Middle School and will then be traveling to compete every Saturday leading up to the State Championships at Ford Field in Detroit on November 4th!
MARCHING BAND FUNDRAISER
Our Century Resources fundraiser is underway!
Please support our band program by ordering from any current 6th-12th grade band student or online.

SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP TIME
It is never too early for your senior to start completing scholarship applications. Each week, I will share in this newsletter all new and updated scholarships that we are aware of. They all have deadlines. The scholarships attached to this link each have a deadline in August or September. Sit down with your senior and go through these links. Identify which ones fit your senior. Some may not apply to your particular child's interests or qualifications. We will hold a scholarship night in January to provide more information regarding scholarships and what to expect. Many of these scholarship applications take only minutes to complete. Free money is always good. Free money adds up and can pay for the cost of books, tuition, housing, and other needed supplies.
