Mrs. Olinger's Weekly Update
Kindergarten Ireland Elementary
February 18, 2020
Classroom Learning
Phonics Skills: We will be working on blending and finding the medial sounds in CVC words. Students will be practicing rhyming words during this time as well. For example if I say the word bad, they will have to give me a word that rhymes with it, such has had. We will also continue working on letter recognition and sounds from the past quarter. We have officially started our spelling tests for kindergarten. If you see mistakes or backwards letters, please review these at home with your child. This week we will be learning all about the letter Uu.
Writing: We will be working on fine motor stations that include play-doh, lacing cards, stringing beads, etc. We will also practice making sentences and how to stretch out words on our own. This week we are working on writing two or more sentences to state our opinions and why we like something more. Next week I will have students try this independently as a practice for their report cards.
Math: Students will try to find the missing addend for the sum of 10. The problem will look like this 7 + _____=10. In the classroom, I have students draw 7 circles above the number 7 and then count on above the blank and draw those circles until they reach the number 10. See the picture below for an example. We will continue practicing counting to 100 by ones each day during calendar, as well as counting to 100 by 10s. We have introduced the 3-D shapes cube, cone, cylinder, and sphere. Try to see how many you can find when you're out with your child this week!
