Edgewood's Tiger Talk
November 30, 2018
Notes from the Principal
As some of you know, two years ago, we were awarded the honor of being named a State School of Character. This honor came with an extensive application process. We go through this process not because of banners and prizes (that would be ironic, right?), but because the process helps us to analyze our practices and identify areas for improvement.
Our site visitor 2 years ago gave us valuable feedback, and over the past two years, we've worked to shift our practice so that we're helping to build children who are intrinsically motivated to do the right thing and work hard. One of the ways we do this is by noticing character in our midst. Students who spot character in action fill out "APAWS" and put them in my mailbox. A couple are read on announcements each morning. We've collected hundreds of APAWS over the past year and a half.
This week, we hosted 40 educators from around the Milwaukee area who are interested in learning about character education. We were humbled by the honor, and visitors were impressed with students friendliness and pride as they talked about the things we do at our school.
Focusing on Character Education, and working through the application process, is one of the ways that we strive to teach the whole child at Edgewood. We're proud of our ongoing work, and thank you for partnering with us.
Cold Weather is Here!
If students do not have snow pants, snow boots, or snow mittens, they MUST stay on the blacktop by the building where it's cleared.
Please label coats, hats, and gloves with a sharpie on the tag, and if you're missing something, encourage your child to check the lost and found if something is missing.
If you need assistance getting a hat, coat, or snow gear for your child, please let Mrs. Boyd or Mrs. Michlig know.
Items We Need
- Snow boots
- Snow mittens/gloves
- Snow pants
- Underwear
We DO NOT need more hats/scarves--we have plenty!
Musical Notes from Mrs. McClanahan
December and January bring many celebrations that are highlighted with varying styles of music. In music class the 2nd - 5th graders will be experiencing celebratory music and making the connection between the concepts we have learned thus far this year and the music we are hearing.
The K5 and 1st graders will be exploring what the holidays were like back in the late 1800's and early 1900's as we read more of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books.
Our concert date has been set! February 20th.
The K5-2nd portion of the program begins at 6:30
Choir and 3-5 begins at 7:15

EHSA Update
Thank you for attending our November EHSA Meeting. Mrs. Boyd was there to share some insights into the “School of Character” recognition, and the process to becoming a national school of character. 3rd grade teachers came to say thank you for supporting their field trip to the Nate the Great Mystery Musical. They also shared some highlights from 3rd grade! This fall the students studied monarch butterflies and their migration habits. They planted milkweed outside of our school to provide habitats for them. Through this unit, they also learned about compassion for animals and the world around us. Mrs. Lepine (our school instructional coach) also discussed some of the 3rd grade goal setting they are working on as a team.
As a recap to our fall fundraisers:
- The Halloween Dance was a great success!
- With your help, all of the teachers’ book fair wish lists were fulfilled via your donations and EHSA donations. Also, we were also able to add to our sign budget via our profits from scholastic.
- Thank you for supporting the fall fundraiser and coffee and Kringle fundraisers. Each of these contribute to the EHSA budget we set aside for field trips, school assemblies, and classroom supplies.
The teachers write thank-you cards to EHSA for our all of their support. We were able to provide K4 with a few extra rest mats, offset the cost of the field trips for 1st and 4th grade, and also buy supplies for our K5/5th grade Buddy Bonding time. They are making ornaments to donate to the senior center!
