Dystopian Controls

By Alexis

what are dystopias?

There are four types of dystopia

  • Corporate control: One or more large corporations control society through products, advertising, and/or the media. Examples include Minority Report and Running Man.

  • Bureaucratic control: Society is controlled by a mindless bureaucracy through a tangle of red tape, relentless regulations, and incompetent government officials. Examples in film include Brazil.

  • Technological control: Society is controlled by technology—through computers, robots, and/or scientific means. Examples include The Matrix, The Terminator, and I, Robot.

  • Philosophical/religious control: Society is controlled by philosophical or religious ideology often enforced through a dictatorship or theocratic government.

Corporate controls

Company one - GE

Ge controls Comcast, NBC, Universal pictures, and Focus feature. These companies control what we watch and what news we learn about.

Corporation two - News corp

News corp controls Fox, Wall st. journal, and the New york post. These are all companies that control what we read and what news we know about.

Corporation three - Disney

Disney is a big corporation dealing with what kids watch and what they listen too. Disney controls ABC, ESPN, Pixar, Miramax, and Marvel studios.

Corporation four - Viacom

Viacom controls what some teens watch and they control movies people see. Some of their notable properties are MTV, Nick Jr., BET, CMT, and Paramount Pictures.

Corporation five - Time Warner

Time Warner has a lot of media and cinema control. They control CNN, HBO, Time, and Warner bros.

Corporation six - CBS

CBS has a lot of control over media and news. They also control companies like Showtime, Smithsonian channel NFL.com, Jeopardy, and 60 Minutes.

We are being controlled by corporations

We are being controlled by corporations because younger kids have more of an influence on people and they are being persuaded into wanting thing like legos and wanting to watch certain tv shows because they believe that it is cool.

Many parents would do almost anything for their child or children when it comes to buying toys that they would enjoy. But most parents don't think about what these toys or tv shows are doing to their children. For example, Disney Controls a lot of what kids are watching and the toys that they are playing with. The current movie that children are interested in is the movie Frozen. This movie is about a bond between two sisters and the love they have between each other. Another example of us being controlled by corporations is that tween girls are at an age where their appearance is starting to matter to them and corporations are taking advantage of that. Companies are coming out with toys to make extensions for your hair or making toys that have kids using already created decal stickers for your nails.

To conclude, we are being controlled buy corporations because they are releasing toys that are not as creative as they used to be. These toys have kids following instructions and using already made templates.

Bureaucratic control

The police are here to protect us from the people in the world who are out to hurt the citizens of the United States. But are they really protecting us?

Currently the police are viewed as the complete opposite. They have been hurting innocent people. For example the incident with Ferguson and then Michael brown cause outrage throughout the country. This was not the first time this has happened, remember? there was also the Trayvon Martin case.
